66402 2002-07-29 07:37:00 Hi. I hope this post isn't too commercially oriented - if it is, Mods please delete and I won't hold it against ya....

I am just after a feel for an idea I have regarding offering smallish sized websites free of charge, using a subdomain in the usual format http://yourname.myname.co.nz.

I suspect I would offer between 5 and 20 megs of space. Of course you can get that already elsewhere, but my difference would be that a lot more features would be available, eg FTP, some email tech support, MySql database, webmail, cgi's, stats, php, FP extensions (ick) if wanted, mailing lists, password protection, possibly SSI and SSH, and a fair bit more.

The major pro's apart from the above, would be NO pop-ups or intrusive ads, ditch that hotmail or yahoo free anonymous email, and loads of feel-good factor in supporting an N Z business.

What's in it for me, I hear you ask? Well your site would have a clear but unobtrusive and static "This site hosted by..." ad. I would vett each applicants' site so as only have tasteful or useful, or tasteful or useful highish-traffic-generating material. Also I would strongly encourage search-engine submission and quality search-engine recognisable techniques integrated within the site.

Your feedback would be wonderful, thanks!

66403 2002-07-29 07:59:00 HURRY UP!

When can you have it done by. I'm sick of having to use Tripod (http://www.tripod.co.uk) for php and sql hosting.

Plain basic hosting I findOrcon (http://www.orcon.net.nz) to be good, apart from Susan's lockout.

It would be great to have a free (small ad, or none) NZ based webhost which allowed the use of decent stuff.

Also would be good to include a pay to remove the ads option.

66404 2002-07-29 08:15:00 Hey that's orrrrrrsome, JM! I'm highly encouraged by an early positive response. Thanks!

You're right, Orcon is great.

A "pay to remove the ad" option sounds wonderful too, from my perspective especially. But how much? Maybe NZ 25 bucks a year?

Remember too that if you have your own domain name, it can be pointed to the site, and look to the casual visitor as if the site were hosted by yourself.

66405 2002-07-29 08:52:00 I reckon that figure you mention isn't too bad.

After all you'd be paying that much per month for hosting like that from other hosts.

Just remember not to get too big too quick.

Also don't be one of the places that offers a free service and then stops.

*grumbles off about lack of free services on the internet*

66407 2002-07-29 22:05:00 Sound like a great idea Greg. Having those options esp PHP4, PERL, CGI, mySQL would be good.

Personally I'm happy to pay say $50 to $100 a year for such a service with around 50-100 MB space. There are some superb content management software such as PostNuke that would make setting up a website remarkably easy.

Keep us posted.

66408 2002-07-30 00:10:00 Greg, thanks for the opportunity of having a free web hosting.

Lets know when it's available.

Thanks,

66409 2002-07-30 10:20:00 One of the reasons i set up a webserver on my own machine, apart from the learning curve, was that their seemed to be few cheap/free hosts in this country. If you offered free, then that gives us the chance to play with it try it out, and then pay for the full blown version with lots of space etc.
Domain support & e-mail hosting would be really good...
Of course it's easy to find this sort of thing at a good price, but for technical and moral reasons, i would rather get this from a server in NZ, than a server in america or something.
I get a bit peeved finding .nz sites coming in from overseas... it's rediculis, particually as more and more people pay for international data!

I just hope you have researched the price of a serious connection to this countries backbone. Selling to a local market is a damn fine idea!

Freehost, part of interspeed, used that idea. Through them i got unlimited_emails@my_domains, something.net.nz pointed at my home server, and various other play sites that mainly work by having one invisable frame that they host which used to display the visable frame within it, that is someone elses site hosted on their ISP space. these move so little data, that they donot bother to charge me for the hosting, which is what they claimed they would do if i exceeded an undefined amount. They nolonger offer this free service to new customers.
Having played with the systems, i got to find how they worked, and am now getting a price with them for serious hosting for a project i'm involved with. The decision was based on the devil i know being a better choice than the ones i don't.
See, giving it away can have commercial advantages, but you allready figured that out, didn't you?

66410 2002-08-01 22:37:00 Hi, and thanks again for such positive feedback.

As a result I'm going to do a trial (not with any commercial intent mind you, at this stage! lol). Please would all respondents this far send to me what they would like as a username. Unfortunately I will have to manually set up each account, so this may be a little slow. To be open, this is new ground for me, so you'll all be my pet beta's :) [pat pat]

Remember:
1. This is new stuff
2. It's a test
3. I make no guarantees nor warrantees (nor cakees nor muffinees, but I do do currees for my beloved)

Please advise in your email also:
What minimum server space you require
What functions & features are essential
What functions and features are desirable but not essential

Also - I have to register a new domain name - what would you all like? eg your site will always be a subdomain, so I need to know what you would be happy with such as yourname.whatnamegoeshere.co.nz - I reckon shorter is better, and I see that hostnz.co.nz is currently available (unless some scummy goes and registers it between now and then! haha)

If you can recommend a good one then you'll get.. um.. a Mars bar? Well, you'd have to rent a spaceship to fetch it or course!

To Chris... Lamentably, my servers are in fact off shore. As discussed in various forums, local hosting with broad-pipe access is prohibitevly costly in this country :(
