66556 2002-07-31 11:13:00 I usually just back up crucial stuff to Zip. As well as crucial stuff and other stuff to CDRW.

I've never done a restore so it's all a waist really.

Susan: It is possible to get programs that will verify files.

66557 2002-07-31 11:24:00 Susan, My method of verification is to copy a few files off the cd back to the hdd & then try opening them.
If they seem to copy & look ok then I have to trust that all data on cd is ok,Fingers crossed :-)
I'm sure that there is a better method but I'm not sure what it is.
Cheers steve

66558 2002-07-31 11:30:00 The CD writing program I use (HP RecordNow) defaults to verify after writing, so following burning of all files they are read again and compared to the original on the hard drive. Sure it adds a bit of time, but if I truly lost all my data I would either be out of business or out by $20,000 at a guess. godfather (25)
66559 2002-07-31 11:47:00 But what if your house burnt down godfather?

So far, only one person has mentioned that possibility and practices off-site backup storage.

My husband used to take my floppies to work after a big backup and bring them home once a month to redo them. I really should send a CD with him now that I've upgraded to CDs. Just "haven't got around to it".

66561 2002-07-31 21:42:00 Do any of you who run Windows use the built in backup utility? honeylaser (814)
66562 2002-07-31 22:30:00 I used to but ran into a couple of problems .

1 . Each new version of windows has it's own version of backup - which are NOT backwardly compatible!

So . . .
Running Win 95, time for an upgrade so backup . Install Win98, go to restore backup . . . doesn't work . Stress out for a bit . Find Win 95 disk, install that version of backup, restore OK .

2 . Went to reformat so used backup to 2 zip disks (and fortunately copied critical files to a third as a straight copy) . Reformat, reinstall backup - 2nd disk didn't work .

These days find it easier and less stressful to do straight copies to other disks .

To make this easier I try to store ALL data - including emails & one or two programs like WS_FTP - into sub folders off My Documents . Keeps it all in one place .

66564 2002-08-01 10:21:00 Susan, I verify my data with a program called CDCheck available at:

www.elpros.si

CDCheck will verify that the data on the CD is identical to that on your drive. It will give you an error list of any files that do not match or could be suspect.

Tip 1: Use the 'compare' feature to do your verification. The 'check' feature is not as good. (IMHO)

Tip 2: The program works by comparing the CD to a directory on your drive. If you use multiple directories it could complicate things a little. This is not a problem for me as I hang most of my data off a single directory for ease of backup. (Does that make sense? It's been one of those days again!!!!!)

I use a HP burner wirh RecordNow. The verification on that program can sometimes misbehave and report errors where there are none. Thats my experience anyway.
