2002-07-31 05:30:00 | Or, www.winmx.com works for me, niice and fast, get max banwidth allowance on JetStart!!! Don't forget it'll cost ya towards your allowance if you are on cable and not dial-up. 56K modem usually does just fine though, but most music videos are about 40Megs each, or full lenght movies are about 700 in DivX (I've done music videos but not full lenght movies myself) Chilling_Silence

2002-08-01 00:15:00 | no way! edonkey is the best by far! u can limit bandwidth for uploads and downloads (I recommend 1.5 kbps up, 6 kbps down), u can connect to servers all over the world, u can chat! i normally leave on over nite thanks to clearnets flat rate :) usually takes me about 4-5 nites solid downloading for 6-700megs (56k modem). the good thing is u can't stop people from uploading and neither can they, they can only LIMIT it. once u r connected to a server u can search for any file types not just mp3s and avi's/mpegs. oh yeah keep away from kazaa/morpheus...DODGY! also by way of sites like www.sharereactor.com and www.filenexus.com, the latest stuff can be linked directly to your edonkey ready for download! SWEEET!!!

2002-08-01 03:08:00 | warez is basically illegal programs, ie copied movies, games, programs etc something this forum is against so don't even bother discussing it ;-)

2002-08-01 03:18:00 | "...usually takes me about 4-5 nites solid downloading for 6-700megs (56k modem)" That's the only problem with using these file-sharing programmes on a dial-up. Does anyone know of any good download accelerators that would speed things up?

2002-08-01 03:38:00 | lol there are tweaking programs that can help (easyMTU, ispeed for eg) but nothing is going to overcome the limits of the phone lines (without going to dsl/cable/satellite). 700megs is just going to take a long time to download.period.

2002-08-01 03:42:00 | A 56k modem typically connects at 50kilobits per second. That allows for 50,000 / 8 = 6.25 kiloBYTES per second. This is increased by compression and decreased a bit by start and stop bits being added. No download accelerator can get more data through the phone line if your settings are optimised now. Often the limitation is in the overseas links, running slower as well. Typical speeds may reach 8 or 9 kB/s for compressed files but normally lower (much lower). Many files are already fully compressed so cannot be compressed again.

2002-08-02 04:06:00 | Using Multithreading does help, get's the max out of your connection no matter what, even my 28.8K modem can artificially do 43.5K in WinMX coz of multithreading... dunno how true it is, but the timing was cut in half, so.... But anyways, multithreading will increase speed heaps!

2002-08-02 04:23:00 | > But anyways, multithreading will increase speed > heaps! Rubbish. It all goes through your (1) modem. If you had 2 modems and 2 phone lines, yes. Multithread may allow you to get *normal* speeds if the site you are downloading from limits the resource per thread. Also often better diversity of any internet based resource constraints can be had when downloading from different sites, but the total *cannot* exceed that which your phone line and modem can handle. Its like saying "if I cut that pizza into 4 pieces I can eat it faster" Only true when 4 people are eating it.....
