66857 2002-07-30 20:25:00 I have Office 2000 and WinXP Pro. I wish to use MS Equation Editor in Word but it is not present as an Object in the Insert menu where it should be. (I used to have it there but I think it disappeared when I installed WinXP - but not sure if that is the reason).

When I go to Add/Remove Programs to try and get it off the Office CD, I get a message saying: "This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it or contact the applic'n vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package". I can't run the CD at all - just get the same message.

I have installed Office 2000 Service Pack I some time ago. Downloaded Serv Pack 2 just now but it would not install - similar message.

I am thinking of uninstalling and re-installing Office but I am scared that it won't re-install because I may get the same message. (I need Office desperately for some work I am currently doing).

Would be very grateful for any comments or help.

66858 2002-07-30 21:22:00 You have a corrupt installer file at a guess.

Go to here (support.microsoft.com) for microsoft instructions to fix it

66859 2002-07-30 21:32:00 godfather - you are saviour. I did try to find this on the MS site but was not successful. Many thanks. KiwiCJ (1270)
66860 2002-07-31 10:56:00 Although I thought godfather had saved me, all is not as clear as I had hoped. Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q295823 is EXACTLY on this point, and it tells what to do if you have Office 2000 with Win95/98/SE/ME but not what to do if you have Office 2000 with WinXP. It seems to me that the Windows Installer Cleanup utility is for Win9X but is not not supported in WinXP. It seems WinXP might have it built in but it does not say how to use it and the WinXP Help is not helpful.

I would love godfather or someone else to help further if they can - I'm very stuck here.
