66687 2002-07-30 05:54:00 Recently purchased GTA3 and have big problem with frame rates, it just keeps stuttering all the time.
I have a fairly new HP computer
1700 athlon
256 RAM
n Vidia 32mb TNT2 graphics card

I can play all other new games perfectly, ie MOH, RTCW, but GTA doesn't seem to play right.

I updated my graphics card driver a couple of week ago, will there be a new one?

I can't seem to find any way to lower graphic either to make it better.

Seems like a waste of money at the moment.

Any suggestions?

66688 2002-07-30 06:16:00 if you use the nvidia detonator driver (I'm not sure if TNT uses it) try this...
right click desktop > properties > settings > advanced > "Geforce 2 100/200" > additional properties

replace what is in "quotes" with the name of your card
from here you could try tweaking the antialiasing, direct3d and/or opengl settings.

try anything that indicates better performance over better image quality.

66689 2002-07-30 06:23:00 OR, you can just get new drivers - i have a similar card (but with 64mb), on a very similar system, and i have had no probs except for when the text were just yellow boxes because the language hadn't been specified - but thats beside the point. goto http://www.nvidia.com and get new drivers - im sure that should fix it - it helped fix my probs

gud luck

66690 2002-07-30 06:34:00 Already have that detonator driver, reinstalled it, no change!

Any recommended tweaks I could do to help?

66691 2002-07-30 06:50:00 You could: Try 640x480 resolution. Add the 'coolbits' registry hack so the detonator drivers display the option to disable D3D VSync. Lower the quality settings inside the game. Make sure your CD-ROM is using DMA or copy the WAV files to the harddrive once you have applied the 1.1 patch for GTA3... Overclock the video card? You may find that turning off 1 particular setting in the game will speed things up. GTA3 uses all sorts of effects, perhaps your video card doesn't support one of them (eg TNT2 has no hardware T & L) BIFF (1)
66692 2002-07-30 06:53:00 You say GTA patch, I haven't used one, will this help?

I dunno about registry, never done that before, I don't wanna stuff things up.

66693 2002-07-30 07:05:00 first thing what sort of frame rates are you getting?

you can try rivatuner (http://www.nvworld.ru/) and tweak out the card a bit.

you can try different drivers, you might find some of the older drivers work better. theres been no real major change in drivers for the TNT cards for a long time, however you may find one version more compatiable to your system.

why would anyone handycap a nice system like yours with such an old card beats me :(

66694 2002-07-30 07:15:00 Go to display options and make sure trails is turned off. I also found that having frame sync and frame limiter turned on seems to make the game run better. Razer (651)
66695 2002-07-30 08:27:00 You can get the 1.1 patch for GTA from here:
www.take2games.com

You can get a .reg file that only needs to be double clicked to enable CoolBits from here:
www.overclockers.com.au

Once you have run it there will be new options available in the Display Properties->Advanced Properties->Additional Properties screen.

If the framerate problems get worse when changing radio stations then the problem may be caused by your CD-ROM running in PIO mode....

66696 2002-07-30 21:18:00 Already turned the "trails" off, it helped, why it was on in the first place beats me! Other settings are set correct.

Tweak'e, as for the card, I dunno, it came standard with the PC, as it is a HP I dunno whether I can replace it although I would like to.

I'll try this coolbits thing when I get home tonite.

Cheers
