66810 2002-08-01 23:57:00 Seems as if the image file is not stored in the same folder as the index.htm?? (perhaps its still on your HDD) godfather (25)
66811 2002-08-02 00:12:00 Thanks GF, but that's not my biggest concern. I want to know how to redirect www.knightguider.orcon.net.nz to www.knightguider.orcon.net.nz/index.htm automatically.

Just like whn you type in www.pressf1.co.nz you end up at pressf1.co.nz

cheers

66812 2002-08-02 00:16:00 Graham, if you've got the index.htm file in htdocs then whenever your url www.knightguider.orcon.net.nz is typed in then people will get that index.htm page. They don't need to type in www.knightguider.orcon.net.nz/index.htm

Like godfather says, your graphic can't be uploaded yet or is not in the same folder as the index.htm file. Check it again.

66813 2002-08-02 00:18:00 Doesn't it work for you Graham? It does for me. Susan B (19)

Web sites are configured on the server to open a file when an address is typed in.

The files that are set to open automatically are one of the following:
index.htm
index.html
default.htm
default.html

If you name your home page as one of the above it will open without having to type it.

Mind you, if you decide to use ALL of these default names - the one that will open will be the first name in the web server "first file open" configuration box. (Had a friend once who created an index.html AND a default.htm in the same directory. Updated the second one and the old page loaded)

66815 2002-08-02 00:27:00 Oh, your graphic.

It is called kcs.jpg

Make sure it is in the same folder AND remember file names are case sensitive. If you called it Kcs.Jpg - it won't load.

66816 2002-08-02 00:29:00 hmm, left it for a few minutes, and rechecked, and it seems to be working. What is the expected update time on a server such as orcon?

I was able to get two different versions of the home page by typing in the two different url's - strange.

I will persevere and let you know with a new thread if I hav any more probs.

66818 2002-08-02 01:50:00 Phew! Just got in. :D

Usually when a URL is typed in a browser without a directory eg www.dot.com as opposed to www.dot.com/pages/page1.htm it will look for a file called index.htm or index.html in the root directory. It seems that Orcon's root directory in this case is htdocs? not sure haven't played with Orcon yet (putting up 2 new site there soon) but otherwise, it's usually right below the URL.

If a directory is specified, the browser will look for an index page in that directory. If none is found, then different things may happen according to what browser you are using.

66819 2002-08-03 03:16:00 Graham & Elwin. I had another look at Orcon & as reported there is no sign of a Free Web. Am I looking in the wrong Place? Should I wait for Greg S's Possible web hosting to arrive? Poppa john. Poppa John (284)
