66697 2002-07-30 06:03:00 Is it worth waiting for the new chip AMD (have i got that right)
When does the new low price for p4 hit New Zealand?
I know it is hard to be up to date for as soon as you buy a new pc it is out of date Bit like a second hand car Drive it round the block and loose a couple of thousand. Still, I don't want all the music stuff. Just faster, quicker and new tricks to explore

66698 2002-07-30 06:07:00 what is the new AMD chip you are waiting for?
personally, I prefer AMD chips, they tend to be a bit cheaper I think. They also kick butt.
(waiting for a million intel lovers to slam me...)
It's a matter of personal preference when it comes down to it...

Bare in mind that by buying a chip that is a little older technology, you will save yourself a good few bucks...

66699 2002-07-30 06:20:00 tweak'e's Sunday news post says that the prices of Athlon XP and Duron processors have just been cut (yay!) so they're even cheaper now. Susan B (19)

66701 2002-07-30 07:05:00 the price drop might take a while to filter down to retail level here in NZ.

there is also no point in waiting. there always a price drop or a new model out coming out. just buy what you need when you need it, otherwise you will always be waiting.

66703 2002-07-30 12:00:00 funny, I actually wondered which was correct before I typed it, but I didn't really know...

66704 2002-07-31 07:07:00 If you can put up with the speed of your computer at present, then I would definately wait for the new AMD chip "Opteron" as it is AMD’s eighth-generation processor core as it allows you to run the current 32 bit OS/Application and ALSO will run 64bit apps/OS's.
So if you only upgrade every few years, then wait for a few more months, before investing.

66705 2002-07-31 07:12:00 If you wait then you will forever be waiting.

Once Opteron comes out there will be something else about to be released.

66706 2002-07-31 21:26:00 I disagree totally, It has been a LONG time coming, and believe me, the next generation chip (9th) will be a few years away. I mean how long has the ATHLON been around for? before it was the K6-2 then the Athlon chips came along at least 2 years ago (Slot A and then Socket A), so the next generation chip will be at least 18 months away, they will just improve on the speed of the Opteron (like the have done with the ATHLON) Dragonslayer (512)
