66622 2002-07-30 00:26:00 I want to install Redhat Linux 7.3 onto my computer.
I have downloaded the ISO images from the net, and have burnt them to CDR (as the ISO files, and to anothr set as the Burn from ISO).
If I try to use the first CD in the set to boot (not the ISO image one) it comes up with a stupid error message.
I have made a boot disk for it, but not even that helps, as it says that the CD isn't a RedHat one, I have tried using ISO files on the hard drive as well, but my computer now can't find those after having a couple of errors.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get it installed?

66623 2002-07-30 00:47:00 You should burn ISO files straight onto a Cd formatted as ISO. This is basically an image of a CD.

Once done, you should be able to boot from CD1

66624 2002-07-30 02:12:00 Have you used the checksums to make sure the download wasn't corrupted?

There will be a file called MD5SUM in the same place you downloaded the images from.

You can get a windows MD5 checker at: www.pc-tools.net

66625 2002-08-03 06:20:00 That was the first thing I tried. Then I copied the ISO files as ISO files to my computer because if you choose to Install from Hard Drive you need the Iso files, and not the CD contents. timb_nz (1264)
66626 2002-08-03 07:22:00 Thank you very much for the link to the MD5 checker. I hadn't checked the MD5 sums because I didn't know what to use to check them with.

Once I had the sums it created and I checked against what they should have been I found that the 1st CD was bad, but the other 2 were OK.

Thanks again,

Tim

66627 2002-08-03 11:41:00 If your using dialup you may want to investigate rsync.

It will only download the difference between your local copy and the remote copy. I don't know if there is a windows version, but I've seen it used to fix corrupted ISOs.

66628 2002-08-05 14:24:00 Hi BM,

That's an excellent tip! I have been rather frustrated a number of times with getting 400Mb of 600Mb when doing just that. I'll definitely be looking into rsync......

Thanks
