2002-08-01 22:54:00 | It's actually a damn shame about this site - This is in fact the slowest one I ever go to on a regular basis. I get between .5 - 6 Mbps download speed at home, and around 8Mbps at work, yet this site always opens at the same speed as when I used to use dial-up at around 46Kbps. The applets are intolerable, but I haven't yet re-configured site-specific settings in my firewall to stop them, therefore I have to switch it off each time I post here. (as well as enable flippin crookies) grr Also all the packets that get sent to and from the remote ad-servers add to the load time - PressF1 purports to be free, yet this is far from the case. Well I've had my grumble, and know I'm gonna get flamed - nothing's going to change my dissatisfaction, but I know I'm free to log on here or not, and I choose to do so. :)

2002-08-01 22:58:00 | Oh ya, forgot to mention re the Mac thing... this IS PC World after all - Macs really should only ever get second mention eh! (y'know Macs... those user-unfriendly outlandishly coloured, contoured hippy pseudo-mechanical thangs - a bit like the people North of the Border really! haha) (Just kiddin abou' the people comment :) Ya gotta luv the Scots)

2002-08-02 05:16:00 | Greg S: PressF1 does not purport to be free. It is a free service. It costs money to run. That's why there are advertisements. PC World costs money when you buy it. It has advertisements. It would cost a lot more if it had no advertisements (or more likely would not exist). If the server is fast enough to feed "normal" modem users, that's all that is needed. Server speed and bandwidth cost money. Real money. Enough bandwidth for you to see pages downloaded in milliseconds would make it uneconomic. And PressF1 would not exist any more.

2002-08-03 06:01:00 | Yeah Grey Ham Ell, there was always gonna be at least one. So far you're it. What are ya looking for... pixie points? (that's a rhetorical question btw; no need to respond). | Greg S (201) | |
2002-08-04 09:22:00 | Hey, Greg, he's not even on the payroll. But it does cost. Humongous effort in man hours. Let alone servers, software. Tried nzoom.com lately? I think their homepage ate something pretty big. I'm on JetStream and it loads way too slow at the moment. robo.

Oh come on Greg! Do you think this site would be here without advertising? IDG is a private company, not a charity. No site on the web is free and never has been. Someone, somewhere ALWAYS had to pay the bill. You guys don't get charged to use the forum, but of course you pay your ISPs and you see the ads (thouse few of you not blocking them). Our costs are substantial and our business involves making a profit, as does any company. I am not going to apologise for that. Frankly this anti-advertising attitude does annoy me. You all know how hard it is to make money online, and yet you're quite happy to take the service we offer (at great expense - you forget we maintain a crew of 7.5 full-time online staff of all types), and then ***** cause you've got to enable a cookie, and see a couple of ads. Hell, you PAY to see PC World in print and it's 60% advertising! And die-hards who go on about how the web should be free, and USED to be free, frankly have no knowledege of business or the reality of how much this stuff costs. And as I said before, it is a myth that the Net used to be free - you just weren't footing the bills. Well, we do foot the bills. It is bloody expensive, it is hard work, and we walk a tightrope between doing things we can make money out of and trying to maintain a standard where our users value our products. So I'm sorry you find our "applets intolerable", but don't hold your breath if you're waiting to see and ad free PressF1 (except of course, if you want to go and use an ad blocker...) |
