67078 2002-07-31 21:38:00 I am in the market for buying a new operating system. I am currently using ME. I am having a few niggly problems which alone does not warrant buying new OS but I am very impressed by the look of XP (yeah I get off on visuals ok). Now, I am only interested in the PRO version and do not want to upgrade, I want the full install.

I have surfed few NZ sites and the price is about $800!!

I go to ebay and the price (already converted and worked out shipping) is $330.

This is (according to the blurb) full version shrink wrapped sealed with all the key codes etc.

I am always wary when someone offers a deal that is "too good to be true" because normally it is. Apart from the obvious risk of buying over the internet is there something about this USA version (if there is such a thing) that means I should stay clear or are we here in New Zealand just being ripped off by those selling a product with such a horrendous mark up.

Has anyone purchased Windows XP over the internet before?

any comments appreciated

cheers
sam m

67081 2002-08-01 01:56:00 If you do a Google search on US store prices around US$300 plus or minus, seems to be the retail price for a full boxed version. Remember 'all' software in NZ is somewhat inflated in price, same as overseas books and magazines. It pays to shop around, even find a store that will ship to NZ. Terry Porritt (14)

67083 2002-08-01 02:09:00 US $300 translates to about NZ$720 when you add GST, which you pay when buying retail. godfather (25)
67084 2002-08-01 05:06:00 Thats about right Godfather, but I havent paid GST yet on one off stuff I've imported privately for my own use.
Some stores are offering OEM XP Pro at about US$133, and others the full boxed version under US$200.

We dont seem to have much price variation here, it seems fixed by MS.
