67006 2002-07-31 07:15:00 Is it really true that a CD Writer Laser only burns so many CD's and then runs out? I've burnt hundreds of CD's over about 2 years now and my Writer is still going...

Fact or Myth?

67007 2002-07-31 07:35:00 Everything will die sooner or later.

So I'd imagine that yes it could happen but is unlikely.

67008 2002-07-31 07:58:00 I don't believe there are a set number of burns, then it shuts down. A bit like a car - it will go so many kilometres then die.... not that you know how many kilometres that is...

:D

67009 2002-07-31 08:48:00 Laser life varies and I suspect original quality (=cost) may have some bearing on it.

As an indication, a really expensive CD player (component audio type) would run for 2 years 24/7 with music on hold before it would die. A cheaper one about 18 months.

The output from a burner is high, and I would expect it to last a much shorter time in hours, but then its not on 24/7.

By the time its nbg, technology has marched on anyway.
