2002-08-02 05:11:00 I have a friend who's been helping a friend (okay, a likely story!) fix up their computer after a virus got through. Basically, they formatted the PC, and reinstalled Windows 98. After reinstalling, and having great fun getting the drivers needed for the modem to be detected again (downloaded via another PC of course - where a particularly helpful website assumed we were downloading drivers for the modem on the PC being used for the download - a little difficult if the modem needs drivers...! Anyway, I digress...), they're still left with only a choice of either 8 or 16 colours for their display settings. I'm assuming new drivers are needed here too, even though it's integrated graphics - anyone got any ideas on finding these? I understand the manufacturer, model, etc can be found somewhere in the registry after decoding a string of numbers & letters, but here is where my memory lapses... nicthefunkydude (1312)
2002-08-02 05:18:00 If you look at the motherboard and do a google search on the model you should find the chipset, which will let you find the drivers.

Or post the model here and sit back and wait - but your assumption is spot on, thats what you see with a default setup.

2002-08-02 05:33:00 Is there a dusty drawer somewhere with disks in it? The ones that came with the computer? There's quite likely to be a disk that came with the motherboard or the video card. One of these should have the drivers on it. Heather P (163)
2002-08-02 07:00:00 Sadly no dusty disks (dusty alright - friends friend needs to upgrade PC to gain some sort of respectability - 32MB of Ram indeed! He, he), but will pull the thing apart again to give the godfathers tip a go next time I see the computer. Funny thing is, we did think of pulling it apart again to check for the manufacturer, but decided that we were too drunk at the time to be doing such things (mmm, Jack Daniels & motherboards - excellent combo). By the end of the night the thing wouldn't even get past the start up screen unless forced into safe mode - so will probably be reformatting before bothering to go on ;o) Thanks for the tips - will see how we go! nicthefunkydude (1312)
