| 67908 | 2002-08-03 12:46:00 | I have Win98SE but someone has "borrowed" my CD so all i have is the boot floppy, and everything else has stuffed up, my sound wont work on half-life, auto-run for CD wont work, control panel & printer panals take 10-15 to appear, music CD's freeze WIN media player, and so much more. Should I buy Win98SE again (as i cant get another CD for free) or should i upgrade to WINXP? I have a PIII 800, 128 mgs ram, 32meg TNT2 graphics card (crappy but good for games), a PCI audio FM801 sound card, 50x cd, 32x cdrw. also if i do get XP what do i need to upgrade for it to run? (everything?) also how much can i over clock my PIII? i have gigabyte easy tune v3.0 which automatically overclocks it to 903 but.... this was almost $5000 1 1/2 years ago :( now its pretty much budget) |

| 67909 | 2002-08-03 12:54:00 | The PIII will run well on XP, I run some 600 Mhz celerons and a 667 PIII. You will get better performance on 256, but I have 1 machine on 128. Things that may be a problem (apart from games, check the web for patches) are scanners, pci modems, burner software. Most printers seem supported, as are many scanners now. There is a compatability wizard with XP -and available as a download I think- that tells you what wont work. Xp is so smooth, it never falls over. I would not change back, I have had win 3.1,3.11,95,98,ME,XP over the years. Dont expect XP to be faster (though in your case it may be!) than 98, and do check out your software first. |

| 67911 | 2002-08-03 12:56:00 | Hi Daniel, You could always get hold of one of those free WinXP 4 month trial discs from Microsoft and see if you like XP..... then you can make the decision to stay with Win98 or go with XP |

It must be a bugger for hardcore gamers tossing up whether to trade in their "cheating" advantage for whizz graphics! :D |
