2002-08-03 12:00:00 | Those flash HP ads at the top of the PressF1 screen are damn annoying. I just installed a copy of Java2 RE, from java.sun.com, so I could come to this forum, and whenevr those HP ads are on screen, and windows menu I activate (start, right-click, even popups) flash madly on the screen. This is only occuring while the HP ads are present, and even if I minimize the Pressf1 window, it still occurs. Is there a better version of the Java Virtual Machine that I need, and if so where can I get it??? (ps: please don't tell me windowsupdate.microsoft.com as I cannot o there due to security reasons, or so the popup tells me!!) Cheers, Craig.

2002-08-04 09:14:00 | Craig, just disable Java. You don't need it for Pressf1 and as a bonus, those &*%))#@ HP ads disappear totally! :D

2002-08-04 09:35:00 | Yeah, ive done that now, but how come when I first came to pressf1 after my latest reinstall of windows (3 days ago!!) I had to install the Java Virtual Machine to get here?? | Craig Bellhouse (493) | |
2002-08-04 09:53:00 | If you are running IE, it will tell you do install it regardless of weather you need it or not. Opera doesn't. Or shouldn't anyway. Mine didn't.

2002-08-05 13:08:00 | Those ads are cool. I still don't like HP products, but I do like the ads!! Who cares if your 286 won't run 'em properly! :| | BIFF (1) | |

2002-08-05 23:18:00 | <rant> God I'm sick of this talk about ads. Read Bruce Buckmans' reply here (pressf1.co.nz) and get over yourselves!! It's a free site and I doubt VERY much whether any of you would be willing to PAY to come here. So, quit moaning about it. When things go wrong on a site, have you ever thought that it might be other things, such as: - the effects of mucking around with your browser settings - your ISP, their ISP, and all the ISP's in between - the NZ gateway - problems with the 3rd parties they PAY to serve their ads and other technologies to make your surfing experience better - different browsers (and/or different versions of browsers), reacting differently to different types of technology - other software you have on your machine that's not interacting nicely - and millions of other possible scenarios. It's not always the fault of the site - although in this case these ads do need to utilise Java. If this was all I had to worry about, I'd be a very happy person! Advertising is a reality - like it or not. If you're that worried about it, then I'd expect to see you: - turn off the radio or tv every time an ad comes on - cut all the ads out of your favourite publications (even if it means not getting all of the editorial) - leaving the theatre when the ads are on at the beginning - walking down the street with your eyes closed Blocking ads does not help the site either, it just means they have that much less inventory to sell to advertisers, meaning they have that much less cash coming in, meaning you as the user get fewer and less quality services. Allowing the ads to run, whether you like them or not, is a sign that you truly do support that site. All else is rhetoric (the exception being the wonderful regulars who give their time to help fellow PressF1 visitors - these are also true supporters). Exactly how much did you think it cost to upgrade PressF1 to what it is now? By God, it'd be a sad world if we started restricting what we all see - it's called censorship people. I see from some of the posts that some people actually like the HP ads... ain't that a wonder! If advertising allows PressF1 or any of my other favourite sites, to be free and available, I'm all for it. Go the small sites, go the big sites, and 'bite me!' to the complainers! </rant> The Sharkmeister PS. I do concur that pop-ups and pop-unders are painful, but even they can be useful sometimes (eg. when a site uses a pop-up to survey their audience to get feedback).

2002-08-05 23:58:00 | We are (were) talking here about ads that crash Java. I don't mind unobtrusive ads. I don't like ads that crash my computer. Nuff sed.

2002-08-06 00:15:00 | Jeesh, I must have missed these ads... mind you I use the Mozilla.org browser and didn't see the Hp's... mind you I wouldn't enjoy having my browser (or PC) crash. As for ads in general what the heck see em everywhere else. | Babe Ruth (416) | |
2002-08-06 01:24:00 | Rule #1 in business . Don't piss off the customer!!!! Rules 2-1002 Refer rule 1 If the HP ads are causing problems, or are likely to cause problems, they should be removed (or never started) . People who use this site buy the magazines published by the sites owners and if they get sufficiently annoyed, sales of the publications may well drop, so the site goes .
