2002-08-03 08:02:00 | Can anyone tell me when installing Xp how to force a Fat32 format instead of Fat .... under the options given there is only NTFS and Fat (2 options for either) and if u choose Fat ..... that is exactly what it ends up not Fat32 ..... ?? | Will (553) | |
2002-08-03 08:14:00 | i didn't think XP would format in fat16. why not use NTFS? | tweak'e (174) | |
2002-08-03 08:22:00 | Dont quite understand, there is no "FAT", there is "FAT32" and "FAT16" for Hard drives. Are you saying that it defaults to FAT16 even when asked for FAT32? What size partition are you formatting?

2002-08-03 08:27:00 | If i rememer right XP will offer FAT or NTFS. the fat option will only give fat32 NOT FAT16 the NTFS will omly give you NTFS 5.0 (there are sevral versions of NTFS) XP wont/can't format FAT16 have fun.

2002-08-03 08:46:00 | booting from the CD and creating partitions only gives the option of Fat or NTFS so I choose Fat thinking it must mean Fat32 but when XP was up and running it showed the file system as Fat ..... but maybe it means Fat32 ..... got me thinking now as I have reformatted to redo the instalation | Will (553) | |
2002-08-03 08:48:00 | Godfather .... when u see fat by itself , u take it as meaning fat 16 | Will (553) | |
2002-08-03 09:12:00 | XP *should* allow formatting in FAT16, but it will likely only be an option for very small partitions. If its 4 GB+ it wont/cant be available, so reference to FAT above that size can only mean FAT32. Just not possible to reference a larger drive in FAT16. | godfather (25) | |
2002-08-03 09:18:00 | What if the partition is only approx 2 GB..... for system files only ...? | Will (553) | |
2002-08-03 09:36:00 | if i remember rightly xp wont install on 2gig. 5 gig should be ok but 10 gig would be better (for the other progs that require to installed on c and enough room to allow for reinstall) | tweak'e (174) | |
2002-08-03 09:38:00 | for a file size the limit with FAT16 is 1.9 Gb from memory. It may default to that limit. | godfather (25) | |
