67710 2002-12-10 09:32:00 No, these are players only. DVD - R are not really commercially available, costing a few thousand presently. I think recorders with a Hard Disk Drive will come first.

Dick Smith Electronics have a DVD player (Mustek) $229 and $199 that have similar specs to the Lennox.

67711 2002-12-10 09:33:00 Put it this way, the DVD player price should match your existing AV gear.

Eg. Those people have Suround amp and uses seperate power amp for each channel with speakers that costs over $3000 shouldn't buy one from the Woollies :p

67713 2002-12-10 19:08:00 People generally feel that got a better deal if they pay more and get a brand name. Well sorry to say but a DVD has no mechanical parts to wear out or fail like a VHS video recorder does. The componentry does the same job regardless of brand and price here (and the components are often the same amongst brands). The only differences are can you get the support when you need it and what options/formats does it support. They are all pretty standard with supprot for MP3, CDRW, CD, DVD, VCD, SVCD, XVCD, etc so I would go for it. I opted for the Farmers one and it plays as good as any other I have seen. cipher (1320)

Not really . . given two identical circuit boards but you can use either cheap components or grade A stuff and the results will be quite different . Grade A components will have less interference with other components as well .

I can tell the difference between my Toshiba, PS2, and non branded players .

The only problem is that most branded ones are quite straight, macro vision enabled, can't read cheap CDRs . . . etc . That's why I bought the cheap non branded one :D which supports any format yet macro vision disabled :x

67716 2002-12-11 00:20:00 everything roofus said a page back was spot on . . .

I bought My Phillips DVD player three or so years back - $750 . 00 . . . . now you can get pretty much the same thing for $300 (ok not Phillips - but as has been said on this thread many times - essentially 90% of audio/video gear fort all brand manufacturers is made in China/Taiwan et al esp . Sony save for their ES stuff IIRC) . . . DVDs are fabulous - the picture improvement on even super VHS is 100% IMO . . .

the quality of the DAC and the Laser and to some degree the transport are the impt things and essentially there are only 3/4 makers of these wwide (similar to Intel/AMD regards CPU's) and they are used in all makes (for eg . my Musical fidelity CDP has a Sony transport and a Burr/Brown DAC)

also ofcourse the quality of your amp and speakers

a cheap DVD will do most everything well the average joe/joess wants - yet when you start hooking into 5 . 1 sound etc the quality issues are going to be more apparent (regards the DVD but more specifically your 5 . 1 decoder if your DVD player doesn't do that for you - options etc . ) .

Me I'm quite happy using 2 speakers to watch DVDs . . . :)

More importantly - the quality of your TV - I bought a Loewe (German made) - cheapest of the Loewe range and it is superb - I recommend them (and the price is competitive with sony/phillips etc of the same quality) . . .

so hell unless you're (like me) a bit obsessed with sound quality and have a whole Home Theatre set up those cheap DVDs are great value . . .

please note though that these and most DVD players won't sound as good as a dedicated CD Player - I have tested this myself - and ok maybe many won't notice the difference but to me (a 2 channel audiophile nut I admit!) it was clear - less detail a more processed sound, less overall impact or "realism" .

As sales of CDplayers are way way down this is the only bad thing regards the new cheap DVDs IMO - ie that DVDs will become the default CDplayer . . .

ofcourse people shd buy a turntable and vinyl as I still do (and it is still the best way for music IMO) but there u go I'm dreaming . . . :)

67717 2002-12-11 02:54:00 roofus did happen to say the most comprehensive report on the topic.
If you buy a new Sony DVD player for example, you are guarenteed to have good support, a good warranty, and good quality. I do not know about the quality of cheaper brands, but if that's what suits you, then you should buy it. True, it will probably wear out earlier, but if you don't use it heavily you should be fine.
Generally, you will not be able to buy a cheaper item with the same technology a few months after a more expensive item came out with new technology, because cheaper things will not have as many functions as more expensive ones.
However, you might be better off getting a DVD player $200 more expensive, as you will probably get better service, features, and quality.
That said, DVD players have dropped in price, so they cost less now than they did earlier in the year.
