67690 2002-08-03 06:40:00 Get a "all zone" one.

They say you can see the quality difference between a low end market cheap one and a high market one, but is it worth spending the extra money.

67691 2002-08-03 06:50:00 Mustek have a "multi-zone" option in the menus' -=JM=- (16)
67692 2002-08-03 06:56:00 most definatly on the multi zone dvd........a lot of tv repair places can multizone a dvd player for you but check pricing before you buy........and yes you can see the difference.......some dvd players you might as well just buy a decent quality video player, have a good look at different models....ask for a dvd to be played in the machine and use the same dvd to compare all the different machines....the matrix is still one of the best to try out a machine.
I recommend get a dvd with at least a coaxial digital output. Fibre optic is the other main way of getting digital sound but generally coaxial is the better way. Cables are an important thing to consider also. Most machines come with the cheap and thin cables. You dont have to go to the quality of monster cable even tho a lot of salespeople will try and tell you otherwise, If you are connecting to a digital stereo then you can consider monster cable otherwise stay with the better quality pudney cables.

67693 2002-08-03 07:11:00 I wouldn't buy one without seeing it playing a DVD in the shop. Woolies/BigFresh should be able to do this as they are very big into getting their team members to watch endless staff training videos - so they should have the odd-spare TV lying around that they can do an instore demo with.....

Farmers have been heavily advertising a new brand of DVD on TV lately retailing for less than $300. You may be better to go with that brand - if you are looking after sales service....

Also bear in mind that a lot of electronic stuff the most expensive isn't the best quality...... It was only a matter of 12months ago, that Samsung had a bargain basement reputation. Now look at them.

Happy buying, BALDY :-)

67694 2002-08-03 07:21:00 I think the whole thing should be kept in perspective, what are you going to watch it on?

If its a high end "home theatre" system, then audio leads and connection methods are very pertinent.

If on the other hand you are going to use it much as you would a VCR, to watch DVDs through an ordinary TV, then consider buying a cheap one as otherwise you are wasting money.

As to the zoning, it depends on your source of DVDs If you are going to hire them at the local video store, or get them from the local library the zoning will be region 4, so its not an issue. If you are getting them from overseas or borrowing same, then it is.

Even on my cheap one there is a world of difference from a VHS tape, in picture and sound. I use the Svideo input, but even the AV is quite good.

67695 2002-08-03 09:00:00 Having never been near a DVD player (yeah I know, I'm backward), can someone confirm what I've read - that all (or a lot of) DVD movies have subtitles built-in, similar to the teletext on the TV?

Also, why is the Matrix a good movie to try DVDs out with? (That film is a nightmare!)

67696 2002-08-03 09:17:00 Ignoring your taste (lack) in movies, I can advise that yes, some do. In english, indonesian, and other languages. Audio in other languages can be available to.

Some also offer alternate camera views in some scenes, and you can also zoom in. Both features are useful when viewing "lady godiva"

67697 2002-08-03 11:53:00 Yes godfather..... that Woolies DVD might not have all the trick picture modes to make the viewing of "Lady Godiva" more interesting.....

Nudge, nudge, wink, wink....
