Just want to word process and print to a print server on a 2000 Domain. No rocket science.

68219 2002-08-05 04:23:00 The main problem I have had with later releases is that they want too much disk space. RedHat 6.2 or 5.2 would happily load on a 500M disk. RH 7.1 might .I've still got Slackware 2.0 on a 40 MB disk. RH7.3 seems to want about 1.5 GB. This is partly because it insists on having scripting languages and the other stuff needed to support KDE and Gnome.

You don't have to use KDE or Gnome for a GUI. There are a lot of GUIs which work with X Window. Have look on the RH distribution disks. You can probably set up something which will look like Windows 95. Or for word processing, you could probably have the WP starting as the "normal user" environment. It could start up X Window. (have a look at /etc/passwd. The last element in the entry for most users is ":/bin/sh". If you replace that with the path to any programme, that is what that user logs in to.)

Experiment. Or get a bright kid to experiment. Check your public library for books about Linux which have a distribution CD. There are books with RH back to 4.2 or so at the Christchurch librray.

The main thing is to keep the expectations minimized. As soon as you want to have GIMP, or fancy browsers, or .... the memory (and disk) needs go up. With more programmes, you need faster CPUs ...
