68176 2002-08-05 00:47:00 I recently had the IHUG satellite system ULTRA connection installed on my computer.
This involved the installation of a Sky Media 200D (SM 200 DTP) Ethernet Controller Card.
Since the time it was installed whenever I shut down the computer, I constantly receive the message " System low on Virtual Memory. Windows is increasing the size of the Virtual Memory paging file.
The professional installer who installed the card was unable to eradicate this message despite trying to tweak the way virtual memory was being handled.
I have a new AMD Athlon XP 1700+ with 250 MB RAM running Win XP. The computer seems to otherwise work PK.
The only programs that I have running in the background are Norton System works including the Antiviral program Firewall and Utilities.
I would prefer not to have to disable them
Is the virtual memory message serious? Can anyone suggest how to increase the size of the paging file? Can I just ignore it?
I would appreciate any help.

68177 2002-08-05 01:01:00 Migdale,

caveat, there are MANY opinions on sizing the pagefile for Windows NT/2000/XP appropriately however heres how to modify your pagefile under Windows XP. There are differnet ways to get to the changing pagefile size ... anyway

Click START | RightClick MY Computer | Select Properties | Click Advanced | Click Settings under Performance| Click Advanced | Click Change under Virtual Memory

Select the Drive Partition to use | Click Custom Size |

Set Initial Size to 512 MB (this just happens to be 2*YourRAM)

Set Maximum Size to 512 MB

Click SET

Click OK

Click OK

Click OK

Restart your computer...

Try it and see...

Cheers, Babe (Yeah I know I'm goining to be flamed on pagefile size (again!)

68178 2002-08-05 01:09:00 You wont damage the PC

Virtual Memory is the amount of disk space allocated for storing the swapfile, which holds the contents of RAM when swapping between applications. When it starts to get close to filling up the pre-allocated space it warns. XP usually auto-sizes it, depending on the settings.

Control Panel - System-advanced-settings-advanced

Mine is 384Mb

BUT-you have just told us that when the Tech tried this the error didnt go away...this may be a bug in the program that you have to live with?

Assume when you say shutdown you mean full shutdown and not suspend, many programs get upset in suspend.

68179 2002-08-05 02:18:00 You mentioned Nortons. Have found them to be a pain in the lower regions. If you ring up a help desk one of the first questions they ask is "Do you have Norton .....installed". If the answer is "Yes" they ask you to disable it and try again. Annoyingly it works most of the time. I have found N.... far to inrusive into my system, turns up all over theplace. Thus, try disabling it and see what happens. Have run the satellite system for nearly two years without a problem. As for the virtual memory ? must get a lot of discussion !!! For the cost of the real thing load up a GIG or more and forget the virtual altogether !!! Crunn (1068)

There's your problem. Norton's Firewall programs will often (think almost always) display the message about page-size file when it is run on Windows XP. Symantec have known about this bug for a LONG time, and I have heard recently that they have released a bug patch to fix it so that you can run Norton Firewall on Windows XP (in fact I think I heard about it on PressF1 - I'll search for it and if I find it I'll post a link to it here). If I were you I'd stick with Norton's firewall, as I still have to find another firewall that compares with it.

Well if I was running Norton's Firewall I could accept that :) but I'm not running any firewall at the moment as I just formatted my drive... I was going to get it all working and updated and then ghost the drive, but I <shock horror > can't figure out what to do with Ghost :D
