68136 2002-08-04 17:50:00 Every time I re-use a save or open dialog box from the same app. in WinME it goes back to the desktop instead of to the last folder used, like it did in 98. This makes it especially annoying downloading multiple things from my browser. The boxes don't remeber views either, they don't remember anything. Folders are fine. Any ideas? ?:| maxgross (668)
68137 2002-08-05 06:53:00 Hi, your up early, or is it up late :-) The default directory to save files in is usually determined by settings within the registry. Some programs, such as Excel, allow you to set a default file location and will always bring up the folder entered in this setting.

Perhaps you can advise what application it is and I may be able to help.

cheers

68138 2002-08-05 16:48:00 Thanks for your attention Parry, that was quick! It happens in all apps. For example if I select 'Save target as...' in IE, then navigate to say 'My Documents\My Pictures' and save there, the next time I select 'Save target as...' from the same browser window it opens up at 'Desktop' every time. It happens in Irfanview, Explorer, everything. I was using 98 till a few weeks ago and that used to remeber the last save location for all dialog boxes in all apps permanently, like after restarts and all. It's probably just one setting somewhere but I can't find it, I've tried folder options and TweakUI.... Hope you can help! Cheers. :D maxgross (668)
68139 2002-08-06 23:40:00 Hi, sorry cant find where Windows has this setting. It probably has something to do with a MRU setting in the registry & if I find an answer I'll let you know. I have WinMe as well so I can test it out first.

Its not what you want, but I have found info on changing the default save folder, which can be done via the following link (even though it only refers to Win98 and IE it effects Windows in general on WinMe). Make sure you back up the reg first if you decide to change the default folder.

Maybe someone else can help.

68140 2002-08-07 00:11:00 Hi, should have also mentioned that the most recent file I opened is the last folder I saved to or opened, so it's not something thats only in Win98, but in WinMe as well. Perhaps something to do with a problem install - I'm only guessing.

As a matter of interest, open the registry (start|run then type regedit). If youve never used the registry its much like explorer, just click on folders to open to the path noted below but DO NOT change anything. :-)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\LastVisitedMRU

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\ComDlg32\OpenSaveMRU

For both these folders, tell me what data you have in the right hand pane under the name called "default". Mine has "(value not set)".

Im not entirely sure but I think ComDlg32 may be the file that controls the file open and save dialog box that appears when you select open or save from within an application.

68141 2002-08-07 14:57:00 Thanks again for the speed of your reply! Thanks also for the warning, but 'tis okay, am familiar with registry editing. ;) The two keys you mentioned are default in mine also, but listed underneath OpenSaveMRU are subkeys with all the different file extensions I've saved since installing and in each of them a list of MRU's for that file type, which are all correct and up to date. Windows just seems to be ignoring them. I know what the default folder it set as, because it goes to it every time! :_| I've re-checked that 'Remember folder view settings' is checked in folder options. I know it will be just some silly little setting somewhere.....! I will end up with RSI though if I don't find it soon.....! maxgross (668)
68142 2002-08-07 15:06:00 Just two more thoughts...
1. The MRU works fine in my Run dialog....
2.HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Explorer\Advanced seems to have a whole bunch of settings relating to explorer but it is hard to tell which means what, because they are hex values, and because of Microsoft's lovely way of confusing us by making some things 1=on and others 1=off......

68143 2002-08-07 23:29:00 Bugger, I thought I was onto something with that key! Yup its exactly like mine. Has a list of the last few entries with each having a letter assigned, then an order of those letters in another key to determine the MRU order. I was hoping you would say, "the default setting was whatever the path is that always opens". Life wasnt meant to be easy ;-)

We will try a process of elimation then aye? Perhaps you could do a search in the registry of the path (say "c:\windows\desktop" or whatever) that is always the default and take a note of the keys. You can then post here and I'll check against my PC.

btw, you dont need to write down the long path within the registry. Just right click the appropriate folder in the left hand pane and select the "Copy Key Name" option and paste in Word/text file as you go. You just need to then add the name of the key where the value is.

I would be interested to know myself which keys control this setting. Have tried searching the MSKB but buggered if I can find anything so we may have to do a manual way of finding out.

cheers
Parry.

68144 2002-08-08 14:57:00 OK, I searched like you said but nothing.... just a few app-specific references. But I have discovered something very interesting. It only opens up back at Desktop when the MRU folder is on my D: partition. When I save anywhere on C: it remembers the folder. I have the My Documents folder on logical partition D:, and WinME on primary C:. so until tonight I hadn't saved anything on C:. I did the partitions with Partition Magic 5.0 Pro, from my other primary partition, Win98. I also just tried opening files in Irfanview, from C: it remembers, from X: (CD drive) it remembers, but not from D:... I probably should've tried this before, but it had never occured to me... Does this help, or make it worse...?
ps..My Documents is the only special folder that I've moved...

68145 2002-08-09 01:51:00 mmm more twists and turns than a twisty turny thing. Sorry you've lost me.

<"It only opens up back at Desktop when the MRU folder is on my D: partition.">
* Which MRU? ie full reg path to folder & the key
* Are you saying you have two O/S's on their own separate partition? (WinMe on C: & Win98 on D: ?).

I believe TweakUI allows resetting of MyDocs etc. Is that what you did? You might have to explain a bit more about your setup. I think TUI changes the personal folder described in that URL in my first posting.

I wonder whats so special about D: then. Im grasping at straws but if it's remembering on one drive but not another then perhaps permissions/sharing settings, or an invalid path is somewhere. Perhaps if the path is invalid, the default folder may be the desktop & that would explain something.

So could you please outline a bit more about your configuration and the specific reg keys you mean just to be sure.

cheers
