2012-10-29 03:48:00 | Sounds a bit perverse considering many want to keep the desktop and banish metro! But I have a reason for wanting to see the metro ui on my netbook as I use it, with WMC, to display to my TV and my TV has overscan which makes selecting shortcuts very low down on the screen a problem. That Start hotspot right in the lower corner can be found with a lot of fiddling but it isn't easy with the overscan! So, I start the netbook into the UI then move away with just a mouse. I can then select WMC from the tile but when I exit WMC it goes back to the desktop. I would like a clickable desktop shortcut that does what the windows key does i.e. runs the metro ui. Alternatively, getting the non-app progs to return to the ui would be good. I have tried searching but can't see what I want. I can get shortcut tiles into metro but that's not what I want! Any ideas??

2012-10-29 08:52:00 | Thanks WT, but if you re-read my post you will see I covered this by saying my TV overscan makes it damn difficult to get to the outside of the desktop. Those scan lines are off the readable screen. That's why I wanted an alternative that was visible and easily clickable. Making such a shortcut is, apparently, quite difficult but I found a developer who wrote a script to output the key strokes and converted that to an exe. It is called 'Start Screen' and it works great. If anyone else is interested, it is here:- www.7tutorials.com

2012-10-29 09:34:00 | Overscanning -- OK so things are not displaying right. Why not adjust the TV to display correctly. ;) Nothing worse that some of the picture cut out when watching what ever it is I'll personally just stick with a wireless keyboard ;) Edited: don't know what apps you want to use, as it wasn't mentions, but create-desktop-shortcuts-for-windows-metro-apps/ (www.ghacks.net) may be of some use, even quicker than going to the start page. No time to try it right now.

2012-10-29 20:03:00 | I use a TV as a monitor on a media PC as well, often if you set the input for use with a PC it fixes the overscan issues or if like me you share the input via a receiver then you can use the video drivers to adjust the scaling of the display to fit on the TV. Then again I also have a mini wireless keyboard with a start button on it. | dugimodo (138) | |
2012-10-29 20:14:00 | My TV (Panasonic plasma about 3 years old) can't be adjusted for over scanning - tried many things but couldn't do it. Warning for those wanting to use win 8 to a TV. W8 apps won't run on mine as it says the screen res is too low. Newer true HD panels should be OK, though. So, now wondering why I bothered putting W8 on this netbook! May revert back to W7 and use the W8 elsewhere. PS I did mention I was using WMC!!! Maybe need to check your spec prescription?!!:)

2012-10-29 20:33:00 | Your TV might not be adjustable, but the graphics driver for your PC probably is. Both Nvidia and AMD have scaling options and I think inTel does too. My plasma TV had the same issue and I adjusted the screen to fit in the Video driver - as I mentioned. I tried the last preview version of wondows 8 on a netbook as well, it was completely unusable and I reverted back to XP on it. Absolutely everything I tried from the start menu seemed to give me the same "resolution is too low change it" error and after two days trying to get a graphics driver to work for the intel graphics I gave up. They'll probably sort this out, but there are always some issues with new windows releases.

Brought in 2003, Screen Res 1360 x 768 , and you do know under the zoom settings (with movies anyway) you can fully adjust how it looks, height, width etc. Personally haven't setup the TV yet as we are getting a new Decoder sometime this week. What type of mouse do you have, mines a logitech and in the settings you have the option to map the startmenu ( which is what you asked about) to a function/button on the mouse. Even easier than a desktop shortcut, no scripts or third party programs required. If your mouse doesn't have the option, maybe time to get one thats capable. ;) 4433 |
