1308666 2012-10-25 15:21:00 I have Windows 7 upgrade, Vista upgrade, XP upgrade, and Windows 2000 full so do I need to load all these OS's to upgrade to Windows 8? That would mean I have to load 5 OS's? lostsoul62 (16011)
1308667 2012-10-25 19:01:00 What OS is installed on your computer now?

Question for others: does Windows have to be activated for an upgrade version to accept it?

1308668 2012-10-25 19:01:00 What system are you using at present? Bryan (147)
1308669 2012-10-25 19:50:00 Err, not sure how you would load 5 OS's. You just update what you are running now. Don't try to complicate things even more than they are now! linw (53)
1308670 2012-10-25 19:52:00 Good question pcuser.

My question is how the hell are the MS servers going to cope with the downloads?? They're ignoring me at the moment. Wonder which timezone has to click over before it becomes the 26th.

1308671 2012-10-25 19:52:00 Unless you have a touch screen device, why do you want to upgrade to Win 8? Iantech (16386)
1308672 2012-10-25 19:55:00 As long as you have a qualifying OS running you can launch the installer, if you want a clean install you can install to a new partition or hard drive and that will give you a boot menu that can be modified later if you decide to remove the old OS, not sure how yet for windows 8 but there will be a way I'm sure. For 7 and earlier there are work arounds for doing a clean install without a previous OS, not sure if they will still work for windows 8.

I haven't done it but I think it goes something like install the OS with no key which makes it a 30 day "trial", then add the key to activate it later. I think there are some other steps as well.

I know that with Windows 7, as long as Windows XP or Vista was installed when the DVD was booted you could do a clean install with an upgrade and still have it activate just fine - this wouldn't work for a blank hard drive. Hence my question. ;)

Unless you have a touch screen device, why do you want to upgrade to Win 8?

It works well with a mouse and keyboard too, and the new copy dialog and Task Manager alone is worth it ;)

1308675 2012-10-25 20:42:00 What is the story if you want to upgrade from Windows 7 OEM? I have not had much luck using Google to get the answer to this question. Bobh (5192)
