1308171 2012-10-22 10:54:00 Hi there all.
As per title but I don't want it for street maps but in the bush and that. Preferably with a sattellite overlay.

1308172 2012-10-22 11:11:00 One way around that is by tapping and holding a location on Google Maps, then sending it to yourself via SMS or similar.

Aside from that, I've not really done "waypoints" as such myself.

With Google Maps I found you go to settings/Lab and turn on PreCache map area but I am not sure if it cahes the sattellite view.

Do you just want to store waypoints or view maps offline with the ability to upload/mark/view/goto etc. waypoints?

Just waypoints - I could name 20.

Offline maps with waypoint functions - There are many.

My favourite freeware apps - Oruxmaps and Androzic.

Plenty of help and free LINZ Topo50 entire country mapset data over at:

Raster - Androzic (gwprojects.org) - free.

1308175 2012-10-22 19:00:00 I think there's something called tracks (trackx) just stores waypoints at regular intervals. Then can send you a gpx/kml. One feature i did like over this (a friend had it) over any app I could find for the iphone was it was designed for cars, and included data in each waypoint with the current speed. psycik (12851)

Thanks for that. I basically wanted one that would perform in a similar way to a hand held Garmin.
I downloaded a few last night but none quite worked the way I wanted. Didn't come across those two so shall give them a try.

Go with OruxMaps.

As an example I have just uploaded a ready to go free and legal LINZ Topo50 Lower North Island mapset. Palmerston North & South.
