1309042 2012-10-27 19:10:00 I am really surprised that you would swap a 2 metre cable for wireless, especially at extra cost. You just can't beat a cable for guaranteed throughput and reliability.

But that's your choice, of course.

But that's your choice, of course.I have such a rat's nest of cables at the back of my desk that I'm happy to reduce it any way I can. It will also free up a physical port on my router that I might want to use for something else. I'm also OK spending $25 for the experiment - if it was $100 I'd be thinking twice. If it turns out unsatisfactory I haven't lost too much.

1309044 2012-10-27 20:30:00 I wouldn't change to wireless, if I were you, considering you're only 2m away from the router! bk T (215)
1309045 2012-10-27 21:02:00 That rats nest saved me from having my main PC stolen a few years ago! They tried cutting a couple of cables and gave up! But not knowing you could just yank them out says something about the mentality of burglars these days:) linw (53)
1309046 2012-10-29 08:39:00 I now have the adapter installed and working. It all went reasonably smoothly, although it took a couple of goes before it could reliably establish a connection. The speed is 40-50mbps.

Question: The router has four physical ports, which clearly limits the number of physical connections. Is there a limit on the number of wireless connections?

No real limit (there's probably a hard limit in the router's firmware, 500 or maybe 1000 clients but they likely won't advertise it), but bandwidth is shared of course so the more connected the slower it goes.

1309048 2012-11-01 01:00:00 I've read elsewhere that performance degrades pretty spectacularly with only a few extra connections. Tony (4941)
1309049 2012-11-01 01:03:00 It can do, especially if there's other noise around too and if the router's not a great one. Pushing the wireless is one way to make a router overheat if it's not cooled properly. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)

I never said it didn't, just that perhaps 500 or so can be authenticated and connected at one time, though if they all tried to transfer data at once the router would probably lock up.
