| 68543 | 2002-08-06 00:28:00 | Hi all... Our company brought two Pentium4 1.6 machines from a local Auckland Computer reseller about 5 months ago for Digital Graphic Workstations. We have been having constant little gliches with both machines throughout this time. The specs for the machines are as follows... P4 1.6GHZ, 1GB 2100DDR-RAM, Windows 2000 Pro, GeForce3 Ti200, 40GB Seagate HDD, virual memory 384mb min - 4024mb max. We have a server running Win 2000 server, and both machines are 100base networked. We have had technicians out to change the Ram sticks, and check the complete machine for faults but none can be found. The machines crash when right clicking on any .mp3 file. At different times, certain files cannot be deleted or even read from our local network (from nero they are patheticaly slow) when trying to even access the files). Errors are generated in the form of this.... explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed. an error log is being generated. And even more problems..... When loading Illustrator, it crashes sumtimes for no reason. And very frequently the machines run well....way too slow compared to what they shud be running for a rig of this spec. The two designers who use the machines store a lot of data on their desktops (like several hundred mb). I have asked that they remove this data off their desktop to which i am given a reply of......the professionals have told us that this doesnt make a difference to the speed or memory usage of the machine. Is this correct? Or am i right in believing u shudnt have to much data stored on the desktop @ one time? Any help appreciated from anybody out there........ .twisted prodassist@nwv.co.nz |

| 68544 | 2002-08-06 00:40:00 | well if you are having the same problems on both machines then it would point to a setup/app problem. which service pack do you have installed for win2k? what make/model hardware do you have? are they connected to the internet? antivirus? what programs are installed? |

| 68545 | 2002-08-06 00:46:00 | We use Win2K here in our production department without problems. Of course designers raised on Macs think they are doing something natural by cluttering up the desktop with items. Shouldn't these items be stored in network drives for backup/security/version control reasons anyhow? | Biggles (121) | ||

| 68550 | 2002-08-09 09:29:00 | make sure you have ALL of the available updates for win2k - i noticed more system speed after doing so and the install already had Service Pack 2 on it. And also try that page file setting | nzporscheboy (603) | ||
