| 68490 | 2002-08-05 19:06:00 | I have recently been downloading music from WinMX, which used to play in Media Player 7.2. Suddenly Winamp has taken over and changed all the icons in shared files and will not let me play them in Media Player. Could anyone tell me how to change them back to Media Player and to make this the default player. Cheers to all the good people out there! | Tony S. (450) | ||
| 68491 | 2002-08-05 19:21:00 | Hi Tony, Try this . Right click on any song, choose open with select choose program then scroll down til you see windows media player and click on that . Check the 'always use this program to open these files ' box then click on ok . Alll your icons will change to media player icon and will be the default player from then on . ps - personally I prefer winamp as it is smaller and is not as resource hungry as media player, but . . . . each to their own . sam m |

| 68492 | 2002-08-05 19:36:00 | Thanks Sam, but right clicking will not give me an OPEN WITH option. I can only get OPEN, which immediately starts playing in Winamp. The sound quality in Media Player is far superior to Winamp. |

Just a thought, are you right clicking on the song or just a shortcut to the song, sorry if this is what you already know . I am at a loss if that is not the case . I am sure someone here will be able to help though . sam m |

| 68496 | 2002-08-06 06:26:00 | Tony, you need to do this in Windows Explorer . If you find one of your songs, hold down Shift and Right Click on it . Then you should get the Open With option in the popup menu . |

As far as Open With is concerned, it is a Windows feature rather than a program feature, but by the sound of it Winamp has hijacked it somehow . When I installed Winamp I did a custom install and unticked all of the options for making it the default player prior to it actually installing as I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it or not . I like to be the boss! Anyway, can you not go to Winamp's preferences and under Setup>File types choose the Select None option? Also untick the Associate with Audio CDs . |
