68500 2002-08-06 12:43:00 Hi again,
This may not bring back 'open with' when you right click but this will allow you to associate mp3 to Window Media again.

Go to Start, Settings, Folder Options, file types tab. Search for the file extension that is causing the problem (ie .mp3) and click on that and then click on remove/delete.

Ok out of there.

Go back to any of your mp3 files and double click and you will get the 'Open With' dialog box. Make your change to Windows Media Player and your done.

I did find some stuff about adding "open with" all the time but involves playing with registry, as per always backup before you go there. Try this link (www.activewin.com) and this should solve problem

68501 2002-08-06 19:13:00 Thank you so much susan and sam m. Did what both of you suggested, but I think it was sam's suggestion which did the trick. Problem solved. While I'm here is there any way I can improve the sound quality in Winamp, as I like it myself? That is the only reason I use MP.
Sincere thanks to all you great people out there!

68503 2002-08-07 01:13:00 Musicmatch Jukebox is the only media player that gets a regular workout on my pc. I had it suggested to me for use when doing a live stream as it is seems to be smoother and have better sound quality than most of the others and also has the advantage of being able to minimise very well. I tried some of the others and have always returned to musicmatch dipstick01 (445)

You all missed the important bit.

To Open With..., you have to left click once on the filename/icon first to highlight it. And then hold down shift and right clik!

68505 2002-08-07 01:39:00 Doesnt work with Xp Elwin, there is some obtuse logic surrounding the function. Some files give open with on a single right click, others dont give the option under any circumstances.

For instance .exe gives no options, and there is some logic in that.
A log file give the option on a single right click.
An MP3 does not give the option.

I wonder if it recognises multiple applications could access the file, and only then will allow an ...open with... to be displayed?

But I can open MP3 in more than one app, as I can the log file...

Cheers,Kiwitas,;-)

68507 2002-08-07 06:53:00 Right. If you haven't fixed, here is how.

Firstly open winamp, and hit Ctrl+P
Navigate the tree to "file types", and hit "Select None"
Hit "Close" and exit Winamp

Now go into Windows Media Player
Goto Tools > Options and click the "File Types" tab.
Hit "Select All", click "OK" and your done.

All media files will now be defaulted to play in Windows Media Player
