| 69041 | 2002-08-07 08:08:00 | I know FAQ is still new but just some general comments... Is it worth it to have a tips within the FAQ of common apps such as Excel, Word, Access etc? Or pehaps even a separate section. If I do have some tips for these apps, should I just post and they will be amalgamated into a group at some stage? As the FAQ grows it may need categories (like those when you make a post) unless you plan to limit the size. What do you think? Sorry if I'm a thicky Blackadder thicky but what IS the purpose of the category when posting? You cant seem to search by it and theres no indication in the subject line etc of the category. Have I missed something? |

| 69042 | 2002-08-07 10:58:00 | Parry, as far as the FAQs are concerned it is pretty much user-demanded . The FAQs were originally started so that people could be sent to the relevant one for help with their problem instead of people having to repeat the same old stuff time and again with the common problems . Anyone can write a FAQ, we had a list of topics when the new forum started and I've still got a copy if you want me to post it . Common apps tips weren't part of the original list but I think they'll be useful so if you've got some good ideas, tips, etc by all means post them . I'm not sure what FAQ number you should give them but they need to have their titles standardised like the others so that Bruce or Robo will recognise them and stick them with the rest . FAQ categories will probably be necessary one day, if the number of FAQs grow as they are supposed to be doing . We haven't got categories for the main forum yet but Bruce wanted to have the threads labelled from the start to make it easier to incorporate them if they categorise them in the future . |

I will need to think of what tips to put in anyway, just feeling the water. ;-) On the categories....Holy guano, you mean these guys at PF1 were clever enough to think ahead for the things they might need! Bruce is a bit of a legend then aye? <ooh's and ahh's from adoring fans> Thanks muchly, I should be able to find the list. No doubt in some obscure place like FAQ's? cheers Parry |

Hi Parry, i think that sounds like a good idea - FAQ on tips for common apps such as Excell, Word, Access etc.... If you have got something in mind i think you should post it! Incidently the thread with the FAQ no.s on is pressf1.co.nz If that is any help?? I personally think the more relevant imfo in FAQ the better - so if your keen go for it! As Susan said they are pretty much user-demand and anybody can write them, so the more knowledgable people who are prepared to take the time to write them the better I guess! Cheers :-) |

| 69045 | 2002-08-08 01:59:00 | Thanks muchly J Zep. On a quick search of Google there are plenty of sites dedicated to Excel, Access etc so I will concentrate on the things that I found frustrating in these Apps until I discovered some handy work-arounds. Also perhaps some unusual things that some people may not be aware of. Will just need a couple of days to get things together. Work is unfortunately getting in the way of my surfing etc. Bloody cheek. Parry :D |

| 69046 | 2002-08-08 03:32:00 | Parry, if you know of some good sites that have tips for Excel, Access, etc maybe you could list the links in your FAQ? I know that I've been frustrated with my searches for help on these apps when I've been wanting a tutorial of sorts on them . Not only that, but it's really neat discovering things that you didn't know these apps could do when you see how someone else has done something . For example, not long ago I learnt how to put static "stripes" in Excel for easier reading of data after seeing someone else's spreadsheet . The HP Advanced Excel course that I've signed up should be interesting . Also looking forward to learning some of your tricks . :-) |

| 69047 | 2002-08-08 06:08:00 | Cool. On the stripes I presume you mean using the conditional formatting to make Excel look like a Bank statement etc, by having every second row a different colour. I actually read that in ........... <drum roll> ........... NZ PC World!! A couple of years ago I think though. Parry |

| 69048 | 2002-08-08 06:27:00 | Isn't progress wonderful? Most of the boxes of fanfold paper had that preprinted . (Mostly on the dot-matrix printers we used the back of the paper, because when the ribbon dried out the printer output was lighter than the green bars) . And now people use software to emulate that effect . :O |

| 69049 | 2002-08-08 06:40:00 | Conditional formatting? Is that what it's called? <Susan B looks at notes> Ah yes, it is too . You don't have to have every second row a different colour, you can have three (or four or five or ten) rows coloured then the same number not coloured . But the best thing about it is that you can insert or delete as many rows as you like and you don't have to reformat the remaining rows' colours - they stay the same . Magic! Yes Graham, banks did/do have paper like that and now we can have it too . :D |
