68749 2002-08-06 12:56:00 After approx 45 mins of surfing, my connection seems to "freeze". I can tell that no data is coming in or going out of my PC because the traffic indicator on my Zone Alarm is not moving. Is this because the internet is busy? Is it my phone line? Is it my ISP (Actrix). I run a 733MHz, 256Mb RAM, 56k dial-up modem. My line condition seems to be ok, no static.

If it is my ISP, can anyone recommend a better one? I was thinking of Paradise or ClearNet.

Cheers

68750 2002-08-06 13:07:00 If it makes you feel better it happens to mine too and the only thing I seem to be able to do to fix it is to reconnect which is a real pain when you've just down loaded 99.5% of whatever it is your downloading. I've just installed windows XP and it's got a reconnection gismo in it and I believe that Gozilla does the same so you could try that. Beware it use to come with spyware don't know if it still does. 68751 2002-08-06 21:41:00 Is it because you are using an internal PCI "soft modem"?
They seem to do that, unsure of why but its VERY common.

68752 2002-08-06 22:51:00 Does this usually happen during the "busy" time of the day, eg after school/evenings? If so, then it is probably Actrix and their overloaded lines.

I used to get that all the time with them, but it usually happened within ten minutes of connecting and hardly ever after being online for 30 minutes. Had a winmodem then but zFree hardly ever did that so I don't know if the modem could be blamed, unless it was incompatible with Actrix's hardware.

It doesn't happen now that I'm with E3 but I have other problems with them.... (out of the frying pan into the fire).

The problems you were having with Actrix have all been resolved in recent months.
I have IHUG and Actrix connections and Actrix is running faster than IHUG at present and with no difference in speed during peak times.

68755 2002-08-17 02:59:00 Yes, I can recommend DAP too. I have been using it for a long time and it is invaluable with its 'resume download' feature. It is ad-sponsored (the free version), but the ads aren't intrusive and it doesn't contain any 'spyware' (according to Ad-Aware) as do some other similar programs. Rod J (451)
