69802 2002-08-09 20:33:00 I am thinking of getting a laptop in addition to our home existing desktop and would like to get wireless internet access on the laptop. I have learnt a little about 802.11 and wireless LAN's but I don't think that what I want to do justifies being called a 'LAN'.

Am I right in thinking that if both the laptop and the PC had 802.11 cards they could talk to each other using 'ad hoc peer-to-peer' mode, and that we would not need an access point? Would I be able to get on to the net from the laptop and be able to send stuff to the PC's printer? Would we be able to play a two-person game using this approach (presumably we would need to use 802.11a)?

Would appreciate any comments/views on how this would work and any pointers to web sites that over this stuff for beginners.

69803 2002-08-10 14:07:00 yes ur right...wireless LAN is just like the LAN's that has cables at the back of pc...no different....one of the difference is the the bandwidth of wireless LAN ,compared to those 10/100 Mbps pci internal card, and also different in price.

you do need 2 wireless NIC card tho...one for the laptop and one for the pc..and u need to do some configuring of the tcp/ip protocol if ur going to connect to the internet, using ur pc as the gateway (host)....and u havent mention if u, use dial up or broadband in your internet connection.

btw this is what i read...11 Mb/s (802.11b) and 54Mb/s (802.11a)...the latter would be costly as is just came out.
