69548 2002-08-09 01:56:00 What are you intending to back up (what "files")?
What are you intending to back up to (CDR, ZIP, second HDD etc)?

69550 2002-08-09 02:37:00 Yes, but you cannot (easily) just "copy" all the XP system files as they are usually the result of an "install" and unlikely to work when copied back.

Same with most programs.

You should save all your data (letters, spreadsheets, music, emails etc) so if the worst happens you can restore them to a newly installed XP and program setup.

If you havent had it all that long, just spend some time deciding what you need and finding where it is. Then right click on the file (or folder) and "send to" the CD drive. XP will cache it and you can then burn the files to the CD. Remember a CD only holds 600+ Mb per disk.

A backup program wouldnt help a lot, as you would still have to make these decisions.

You can get "ghosting" software which will take a restorable image of the whole system, however I believe its not free?

I use a DOS batch file and backup selected files and folders to a second separate HDD, on a daily basis and periodically write to CD as well.

You promised me a lesson on that once... :-)
