2002-08-08 22:30:00 | Hi, I am writing this on behalf of a friend, with whom I have a very good relationship, but who is intrigued why :- when Susan B and her associates answered in "FAQ" the very real problems of regaining space etc, both of us followed her excellent guidelines. I "saved search" as she advised for future cleanouts, and now have an Icon on my workbench accordingly- and from whence I regularly use to do just that, and I never have the Icon disappear with the other files- as my friend does. He has to isolate two files that pertain to keeping the Icon- I don't! Why? I can go into "properties" on that Icon and see that "archives" is ticked- he cannot- his Icon does not have a "right click to access properties" . He suggests his icon is not a shortcut whereas mine is- how did I get that and why cannot he do the same? The program is worth a lot and to Susan B I am grateful- though now mystified effie C

2002-08-08 23:18:00 | I can understand you being mystified Effie, as I am too! My results are the same as your own and the first thing I would be asking is if your friend saved his search the same way as we did, following the instructions in the FAQ? The next question would be is your friend's version of Windows the same as yours or different?

2002-08-09 01:22:00 | Hi Susan. I am the friend that Effie is referring to. Effie and I have discussed this problem for a number of days now, with no solution, and he has now decided to ask the experts. Yes I have the same computer as Effie and yes I followed the instructions in FAQ. To remove the temp files I listed all the details in the "find files named" slot, pressed "Find now" and these were listed in the drop down window. I sent them to the recycle bin and then in the "File" drop down box clicked on save search. The computer then did another search and although there were no temp files it showed in the name column "Files named @tm..." in the folder column "C:\Windows\Desk top" and in the next column Save Search. Okay when I next do a search and delete all, naturally it deletes that item also and I lose the desktop icon. The only way to keep the icon is not highlite that particular item when deleting temp files after the search. I hope you can understand what I am getting at. It is no big deal but Effie and I are curious why it should happen.

This could cause it to include its own saved description? Doesnt answer the inability to right click though. |

2002-08-09 04:21:00 | That is very strange. Your computer is obviously saving the search as a temp file instead of creating a shortcut, but it is a mystery why. Maybe the order of your commands are slightly different? Though I would have thought it wouldn't matter. You say that you delete the files found and then save the search. Your computer then does another search and finds nothing. Try saving the search before deleting the files and see what happens. That's all I can think of right now and I hope that's all it is!

2002-08-09 04:36:00 | Just a hunch, but do you have "Active Desktop" turned on? I have a feeling that might be the problem. It can be turned on and off by right mouse clicking on the desktop and choosing "View as a web page" (mind you, this is Windows98SE I'm using). Personally, I have never enabled it because I think it causes more problems than it's worth, but that's my opinion. | Rod J (451) | |
2002-08-09 05:02:00 | Susan B - thank you and the all the rest for very informative advice- question :- if smithie 38 cannot change his computer settings ( for lack of knowledge no doubt) could we set a new Icon up with the search orders inserted?- if so how would we go about it? I have just seen Rod's entry - that is something smithie and I must look into, thank you Rod Thank you effie C

2002-08-09 05:22:00 | Yes, you can set up a new search icon. You can have as many as you like. Just delete the old one and make a new one the same way as previously advised in the FAQ and in the messages above.

2002-08-09 06:17:00 | Hi Rod J. Thankyou for your reply. I have just been speaking to Effie and his "View as a web page" was not activated and mine was. So I deactivated mine and bugger me that has fixed my problem alright. I am fairly new to computers and Effie and I spend quite a lot of time helping each other (the blind leading the blind) the wife says, but I wonder if Rod could let me know what sort of problems you had when yours was activated. What does it do or not do. This is all very interesting and I thank those who have responded so far. Cheers Smithie

2002-08-09 09:00:00 | Hi Smithie 38, To be quite honest I don't know what Active Desktop does exactly. I think it is probably of more use to people that have a permanent connection to the internet rather than a dial-up connection as I have. I know I read somewhere that it interfered with other programs, and caused some conflicts. But I'm not sure just where I read that. Anyway, I just decided I didn't need that added complexity (I have enough trouble keeping Windows running smoothly as it is :-)) so I have never activated it. Maybe someone else with experience with it might like to comment. Cheers, Rod J.
