69526 2002-08-09 09:19:00 Active desktop was an attempt by microsoft to bring live information directly to your desktop eg Stock, News, weather, etc.

However it turned out to be a big bloated blunder that nobody had a use for - especially in NZ as all content was originally designed for USA.

Basically, an active desktop is a web page with enhanced features. You can even make a web page and use it for your desktop (...view as web page) instead of a regular.

Active Desktop however has been known to cause so many problems, that is generally advised to leave it off.

69527 2002-08-10 02:49:00 Anyone know how to turn off Active Desktop in ME?Reading this post,it's the first time I've come across it.Wondered why after rebooting from a crash, that I've had to push a reset button to do with AD.Just thought it was one of those things that had to be done!I've been into Display Properties,Web tag,and unticked" show web content on my Active Desktop".Does that close it down?Did a search on Google, just got instructions for 98.Thanks. 69528 2002-08-12 22:34:00 Hi,
THis active desk top and smithie 38 problems:- if you right click on the screen- anywhere except on an icon a drop down window will show at the top of it "active desk top - mine did not have a tick- smithie 38 did and when removed and instantly his problems about ie "no right click/properties available" " and that Icon disappearing" - came right
Smithie 38 only other problem was three letters in the search string had to be deleted before his Icon search completed correctly -- *.fnd.- he maintained he had not put them in - but he still had the problem until he deleted them - if I am not being too cheeky - I will send on the specific file that my young computer instructors came up with - if you ask me

69529 2002-08-12 23:35:00 As far as I can tell to turn off your active desktop in ME all you have to do is uncheck the "show Web Content" and the active desktop is dead. To replace any wallpaper that it was using just open the picture with Internet Explorer and then right click on it, "set as Background" should be one of the options that appear. You can also remove "Desktop Themes" from your ME Installation if you have it by going to your control panel and the Add/Remove section. The middle tab at the top is labelled Windows Setup and once it finds all the components installed you can remove entire sections by unticking the box as listed or you can highlight a section ( desktop themes or whatever ) and then click on the details button. You can then choose what exactly you want installed under each section. BE CAREFUL when playing with this as you can also uninstall some of the things you need for Internet connection etc, a quick description will appear just underneath. dipstick01 (445)
