69739 2002-08-09 08:39:00 Help
I recently ran Windows 98 setup and now when I boot up my computer a message comes up just before the desktop screen and tells me that there is a problem and it tells me what to do but not how to do it, can anyone help.
Message
A device has been specified more than once in the SYSTEM.INI file, or a device specified in the in the SYSTEM.INI conflicts with a device which is being loaded by an MS-DOS device driver or application or a device loaded from the registry file. Remove the duplicated entry from the SYSTEM.INI file, and then restart Windows.
Duplicated device : VCD
Can any one help me solve this problem .

69740 2002-08-09 08:59:00 1066, I assume you are referring to the 1066 Battle of Hastings? Were you there as well? Ancient Poppa John :D :D Poppa John (284)
69741 2002-08-09 09:27:00 Don't worry about Poppa John - he's just here to keep everyone entertained :^O

Go Start -> Run... type MSCONFIG <enter>

There you can edit these files. Have a look through and see if you can find a duplicate entry. Failing that, look at your autoexec.bat file and take the tick out of any reference to VCD.

See if that helps.

69743 2002-08-09 10:36:00 If you do have to edit System.ini, go Start - Run - sysedit

This will open all .ini files in cascading windows in notepad. Just put REM <space> before the offending line and save, exit. Just close the other ini files.

But hey - be careful in there....

or even simpler, go
Start > Run > system.ini
and system.ini will open in notepad. Then follow GFs instructions.

69745 2002-08-09 11:16:00 Does too! learnt something!

Xp only has a bit of 16 bit support in System.ini, almost empty.

69746 2002-08-09 11:22:00 Goddy: sysedit for 95, msconfig for 98 :D Elwin Way (229)
69747 2002-08-09 11:27:00 sysedit still works for all versions including Xp, but you are right that msconfig is much easier.

Its just that everyone seems to get upset at msconfig warning on reboot after a change, they dont like clicking "dont show.." for some reason.

They think they have broken it.

69748 2002-08-11 10:10:00 Many thanks Elwin Way
I followed you instruction to the letter by going to the start -> run... typed MSCONFIF then enter and I found a file 386 ENH which had a box marked Device= VCD which I unticked, then rebooted. This fixed my problem.
So many thank for quick responce.
