70113 2002-08-11 10:14:00 yeah everything should be able to handle it depending on your current setup.

A harddrive will always format to a smaller size than what you think. Also some harddrive manufacturers use a metric measurement system. eg they use 1000 instead of 1024.

The speed at which the ferris wheel (your disk) travels dictates the speed at which the people (data) can move . The corridor to the gate (IDE interface) has a theoretical limit as to how many people per minute it can carry . ATA66 is one size of corridor . ATA100 is another (what you will have) I doubt your corridor is anywhere near capacity, so you may see more people move, but I SERIOUSLY doubt that you can find the extra people to need the faster Ferris wheel .

What loss?

20-16 . 2 = the room XP and associated files have taken (including the swap file)

You have many GB of music and a lot of junk, which has used (16 . 2-12 . 8 GB)

If you never threw out all the magazines, newspapers, cardboard boxes, junk mail, real mail, old phone books, food wrappers, supermarket bags . . . . your house would get full . So does your disk .

Nothing to do with the size or brand of the disk (we could go into a 3 page discussion on the difference between stated size and size after formatting, but its a bit like a fishermans tale . . it was THIS big . . )

70116 2002-08-11 10:46:00 Goddie, Thanks I understand all that. We have had this discussion before & it all comes down to "Do I really need it" ? What I have now is satisfactory (although I do really need to lift my Ram from 128 to 512 for XP) but if I were just starting in computers I would probably go with all the "bells & whistles". It is Fathers day soon & I will "Accept" the financial help with Ram. Extra Ram may even cure the blue screen I keep getting just after Bootup which MS say is caused by a Driver but cannot tell me which one. Thanks again Poppa John. Poppa John (284)
70117 2002-08-11 12:21:00 Yes, more ram would be a huge help. 128 runs OK but you will see a difference with more. Actually 192 and above seem just fine.

By all means get a second hard disk though, and use it to keep all the junk on. Or swap out your main disk for a newer faster one and keep your old one for downloads, music, etc.

70118 2002-08-11 21:21:00 Are you sure your low IQ brain can handle it :) . I am Studying Computers now, and have done a whole topic on CPUs and I still don't understand half of it .

70120 2002-08-12 02:59:00 N T K. I envy your ability to study computers. I am an old electrician & my forte was "Relay Logic". When I tried to "Upgrade" into electronics & those early computers I didn't have a hope. So good luck to ya.
Incidentally my IQ is 12 today according to Graham L's grading system.
Cold & shivering Poppa John :)
