71008 2002-08-14 10:05:00 I have "lost" my primary and secondary IDE drivers so that WIN98 can't find my two CD drives. It has happened two or three times now and I have to reload win98 to get them back.

Two questions.

Any ideas why WIN98 loses the drivers (could it be a flaky motherboard)?

Any ideas on a quick way to reinstall them. I try to "update" the drivers but win98 only says the current drivers are the best available.

71009 2002-08-14 10:11:00 If you had lost the drivers, then you would be unable to see the hard drive, as this is IDE.

I think the problem is a little more subtle somehow....will keep looking, but post hardware details.

71010 2002-08-14 10:17:00 what sort of system do you have? what cards/devices are installed? tweak'e (174)
71011 2002-08-15 09:05:00 My hardware is
PIII450 CPU
384 megs of ram
viper 770 video card
SCSI card (for the scanner)
20 gig hard drive .
external modem
network card
Asonic sound card
CD reader
HP 9300 cd writer

The computer blew up about 18 months ago and large hunks were replaced by the insurance company . I think most of the bits came from the kamakozoo factory as reliability was never too hot afterwards with lock ups and shutdown problems . I have replaced the CPU, memeory and video card since the meltdown and still get occasional lockups . The motherboard and Asonic sound card is the only thing left from the insurance repairs so I wondered if a flakey motherboard could be affecting things as it is the only common thread for the lockups after all the bits were replaced .

The bios detects the CD's but WIN98 doesn't .

The error message in control panel/systems is "the device is not present, not working properly or does not have all the drivers installed (code 10) .

Try upgrading the drivers . "

I must admit I don't understand why the hard drive is there but not the CD's

71012 2002-08-15 09:18:00 I would assume that both CDs are on the secondary IDE. Maybe try searching the m/board web site for drivers? antmannz (28)
71013 2002-08-16 07:47:00 No. One cd is on the secondary channel and the other is on the same cable as the hard drive.

The CD with the hard drive has been playing up and I thought that the laser must be dirty or something. Possibly there is another gremlin at work

71014 2002-08-16 07:51:00 long shot here. see if you have any dos sound drivers. disable them and see if things work better or not. if not you can just reenable them again. tweak'e (174)

no luck.

I think I will try a clean install of windows. SOme of my other games are having problems finding 3ddraw support and my video card should do that. Hence time to start again.
