71513 2002-08-16 04:59:00 Its a sad day when there are no more computer related questions and so this message board is filled with jokes :p
Oh, well, I guess that's what the "General Discussiong" Category is for :)

I loved that last post by Susan B

I think some of them are having a race to see who posts 1000 first. Susans got over 800 (obviously her hubby does the housework and cooking LOL)

(god I feel hot. Where are those flames coming from)

71517 2002-08-16 13:22:00 I used to disagree on this topic as I thought the chat was part of the atmosphere. But now I am jumpoing the fence - there is a little too much "chat" and it is clogging the works and bumping genuine posts down the line.

I think ther eason is that we have so many more contributors than we used to.

It is good thatwe now have people like chill, GF, Elwin and others I haven't thought of that really help people, that didn't used to visit, and we still have all ther regulars that have been here since before I was here (two years now I think). The issue is, that the chat was always here, just now more people are participating.

There is only one real solution, and that is limiting chat to a single thread that is cleared regularly (self policed system), or a link to a chat area of pressf1. Maybe it's time we had two areas - chat and questions.

I don't think that this is possible to implement, but the chat has got a little out of hand lately. I am guilty of participating, but only on established threads. I used to post chat threads back in the good old days, but now I understand others frustration at these threads, so no longer do.

C'mon guys - I know it's fun, and I know it's part of the pressf1 atmosphere. I know it keeps things friendly and less dry, but remember what the purpose of the forum is.

Please only post things like interesting tips and links. Although funny, joke threads are as bad as spam when all I want ot do is get down with serious pc problems.

Grizzle over.

Keep up with the excellent advice folks.

71518 2002-08-16 13:28:00 Well, I did warn them (Bruce, Robo and the others) but did they listen? Noooo......

I said right from the start, when the new board was before Alpha, about separate areas ... but no too many people out there scared of having to adjust themselves to suit new technology.

Now if I could only have an avatar ....

runs off before Bruce sees this thread

71519 2002-08-16 17:29:00 heres a suggestion.. once a thread is fully hijacked.. someone can start a new thread and say.. oi you lot.. talk about this over here, and leave the original thread for the original topic..
There we go, any of us can do that at any time

any way.. it's rare that a thread is entirely computer unrelated... We get back there in the end, it is after all the common interest.

They are reasonably easy to spot, and avoid, if you don't want to look at them. The problem is some of them have a tendency to be strangely compulsive.
If we did separate them, it would be to dull and clinical. Just questions like "can I keep my data if I use fdisk" and "could I email my c-drive to a friend as a backup" would reduce some of the appeal.
Mind you, I don't think I have spotted a way to use the topic of threads for filtering out off the topic ones.

71521 2002-08-16 21:52:00 Well personally I don't see anything wrong with having two separate areas - one for help question and the other for general dribble.

It won't make things anymore clinical or sterile.

It will, however, make things easier for those people who post a question and then come back the next day (because they don't expect a reply so quick) and fine that their question has been answered and is now 5 pages deep!

And I don't see any reason why the Questions area can't be separated by topic. If you can browse your hard drive and the internet, surely you can browse 2 directories deep to the appropriate topic?

71522 2002-08-16 22:07:00 I don't think it's a problem. You can seek out what you want, reading the off-topic threads is fun and good variety and if it gets too idiotic or abusive the mods can lock it.

I don't want to come here and think of posting something and then thinking "Now is this serious comp-related or not, Oh worry worry."

I've only been here a few months off and on and I enjoy the 'looseness" and the techie details that I have learnt so much from.

Let it be. ;)
