71349 2002-08-15 22:45:00 My old P11 computer, running W95, insists on running Scandisk WITH in depth surface scan, every time it restarts after a crash. It used to do just the system and file scan, which took not too long. However now, with the surface scan included, it can take two hours or more to complete. How can I persuade the stupid thing to do it the old way WITHOUT the surface scan? hukcomse (1516)

71352 2002-08-16 01:07:00 Quick & Dirty Solution:
Open up msdos.sys in Notepad and look for the line: AutoScan=1
Change the 1 to a 0 (zero). This will disable Scandisk altogether when booting after a bad shutdown.

Proper Solution:
Search for the file Scandisk.ini on your hard drive (it will probably be in c:\windows\command). Scroll down until you find the [CUSTOM] section.
Change the line "Surface = Always" to "Surface = Never".
