When I fit 545mb hard drive loaded with 3.11, msoffice into HDrive cradle, setup HD HCS it is found by bios, starts to load up OK windows 3.11 splash screen is displayed, appears to be loading 5secs approx then ( error occured while trying initialise the video adapter hit any key to continue) this returns to C prompt. DIR will display normal dos dir information
Have tried HD win 311 on another older 486 PC and runs OK
No (!) markes alongside any devices in control panel in win 98 have checked s3virge site and svirge driver supports my 86c325 chip No video drivers being loaded in autoexec or config at boot up
Have removed video card and replaced
Renamed existing s3virge.drv and copied to system dir a new one from s3virge site

71326 2002-08-15 21:08:00 What you could try is when you get the C:\> prompt change directory to Windows and type setup.
You can then check and if neccessary change the display to VGA, reboot and see if it will run then.
Else if it is already VGA, change to the win3.1 drivers for your video adapter, for which probably you will need the disk.
If you dont have the win3.1 drivers, have a look on the Driverguide site. http://www.driverguide.com

71327 2002-08-16 04:31:00 It's probably confused by modern video systems. Having two might not help, too. W3.11 knows about SVGA or VGA. I don't know how well it handles PCI bus, (or if it can handle PCI).

You haven't tried the Microsoft phone help line? :D :D

71328 2002-08-16 05:38:00 Win3.1 shouldnt worry about the bus Graham, after posting above I dug out an old drive with win3.1 installed and plugged it my Duron with AGP video card, worked fine after changing the existing video adapter (ET4000) to VGA, went very fast too, even though only mode 0. It's most likely that there is an adapter installed to suit the video card in the 486 mentioned. A wrong adapter will definitely prevent windows booting. Terry Porritt (14)
71329 2002-08-16 09:55:00 I sent a reply but it hasnt worked so far

Did as you suggested Terry SPOT ON Ran on VGA with win drivers and also SVGA 800*600*16 colors. 1024 or 256 colors got error message again

Thanks very much
