71523 2002-08-16 22:32:00 I think that there is a tad more chat than what used to go on in the old forums. But what makes the big difference is that now the most recent post pushes that thread to the top.

The chatty threads are the ones that are getting posted in a lot more so they are always floating around near the top.

In the old forums everything just went in chronological order of the original starting date of the thread. When a topic was rather chatty it just had a lot of posts in it. It was only us regulars that scrolled all the way down the page to view it.

It is possible with the forum software to have separate forums/topics. But I don't personally think that it is required. These forums are more for helping people than chatting.

71524 2002-08-16 22:40:00 Yep, i'm definately against all this chit chat. I've wanted to say something for a while, but since a lot of you guys have been helping out here for a while, i thought it would be rude of me to say something.

Have a look at how many posts most of you have made. Can you really say that they even mostly help related. I think not.

While there will always be chit chat in these forums it would be good if it was limited, if you really want to post jokes, or have a great big discussion because you aren't sure wether timyang is teachme, then have it somewhere else.

& like JM says the problem is that all the latest replied threads goto the top, hence the chatty ones are what people have of their first impressions of this board, and then probably think its not worth posting here, cause no one probably knows anything cause all they do is post jokes and discussion as to wether their friends should go into business.

(ah got it out of my system)

71525 2002-08-16 22:44:00 Wait i havn't finished

Also when some one does in fact ask a tech question it seems lately that people are more interested in telling their life stories instead of answering the question. For example the thread on the diff between a woolworths dvd player and an expensive one.
Those sort of replies are happening far to often, people seem to get a lot of joy by telling someone else their computer specs when the other ask how to remove the window logos at startup. its just completely off topic

71526 2002-08-16 22:55:00 Nah, mon. Take yr pick. The techie posts are obvious and very well responded to. You don't feel like the chit-chat, don't go there until you do.

Whenever I've had a 'genuine' query I've received heaps of responses and good ones at it. If you want to keep yr thread 'ontrack' get back to it and remind people about what you're looking for. :)

71527 2002-08-16 23:22:00 I tend to go along with Roofus, mixing too much chat with a serious question may tend to turn off the original questioner, its also a bit irritating at times to wade through to find out if the question has in fact been answered.

On the other hand as will have been noticed I've posted several off topic pure chats, so I also could be accused of contributing to the problem.
As has been said, the fact that those chats come to the top is the real problem.

If there was some way of having a device or key words in the subject of a pure chat topic that didnt allow it to go to the top that would help a lot.

71528 2002-08-17 00:26:00 Nah......

Keep it the way it is. I think there are some very witty contributions here. What the hell is wrong with a bit of humour now and again.

As someone else said, if you don't want to read the off topic posts, just scroll past them. Actually, I defy anyone to say they don't enjoy a bit of a laugh now and again.

Thats what I think anyway, BALDY :-)

71529 2002-08-17 00:27:00 Splitting the forum up???????
NO way
dead against it
The candy group private lounge when i last looked at it had died of disinterest . Why? insufficient patronage to make it interesting .
Now when i make a post, i want to either throw an idea around, get/give possible answers . Sure sometimes things get ignored, for a while, and sometimes things go of on tangents, but isn't that a good thing? We aren't preprogrammed robots, our ideas come from diverse minds, and diverse sources . Generally if the need is genuine, the response will come, and possibly alot more than was "needed" too . Isn't that good?
heres an example ( . co . nz/thread . jsp?forum=1&thread=23255&message=74544" target="_blank">pressf1 . co . nz) of an extremely dull cry for help that i started . It took a while to get response, but i have managed to get great assistance . . Some would say that maybe this thread is getting hijacked, as it has stopped being a direct answer, and has started turning into a discussion, and therefore could go anywhere . Well i say that is GOOD . As a discussion, i, the freshly deflowered linux virgin, am going to learn ALOT from it, no matter how waffly it might become . I hope it does . Things i hadn't considered will get discussed, and my knowledge will increase . Any silly humorous statements will also be welcome, light relief is good . I can of course throw another question into the pile, to get it back "on track" if necessary .

I'm as guilty as the next waffler for talking "utter bollix" . This has been posted, and acknowledged . I also offer advice that sometimes is of value .
Anyone unhappy with my waffly, silly, and not always relevant contribution to this forum is hereby entitled to a FULL REFUND of all fees paid unto me . no questions asked .

ANyways, if people want to see threads stay on track, steer them that way . Its a public forum, we can all contribute as we see fit .

71530 2002-08-17 00:47:00 I am guilty of contributing to the off topic threads too, i know what people mean about it being a help forum - but it loosens things up a little and a bit of humor never hurt anybody and if kept to a specific thread (which people are doing and labelling them as off topic). As everybody has said i think the real problem is that in the old forum they just went down the list, but now they stay at the top! Bruce and Robo have said they have more important stuff to do than add a chat area, which is fair enough, as they have done an awesome job with getting us into this new forum!! So what about us?? The other thought i have had is with all the knowledgable people who contribute maybe we could do a survey and find out how many F1ers would be interested in going to an F1 chat area at times??And if there is enough interest then perhaps somebody could start a chat page or room or whatever they are, for this - (i don't know enough about how they are done to do it myself) and there could be a link to it maybe?? on the F1 home page if it worked out??
Just trying to think of an option - Flame me if you must!! :D
But i would hate to loose some of the people who help to make this page what it is because they find it too sterile as somebody put it!!
Come on you guys lets think of a solution to it then! That will suit all!!
P.S I presume it would be a huge undertaking to start a page that can be added to like F1 as opposed to a chat (real time) one?? Or am i wrong?? As i said i am not that up on web pages etc...
Anybody got any other ideas???

LOL LOL LOL Just incase anyone thinks I have a split personality, this post written by Viking and signed Baldy is a prime example of the joys of a shared computer amongst flat mates. Must remember to untick that "automatically sign on" gizmo

71532 2002-08-17 01:07:00 I agree with J ZEP, in so much as isn't it up to us to help ourselves, if people want an alternative chat environment?

OK, here i go . . . if anyone wants to say something non computer related to ME, please use my email address (there goes 2 off topic posts per year) or ICQ 5375655 . If its not a personal message, please say it here .

If anyone wishes to start a chat space to divert us from the serious place, fine, let me know . . .
I think it wont work . PressF1 is where we come as geeks to chat about our amazing new superfast processors, our shiny new cases, HTML coding problems, and RELAX a bit while here, well some of us do . I find little appeal in going anywhere else, or seeing things here 100% serious .
