71392 2002-08-16 08:44:00 Tim,

Remember this: "all my problems r gone and my computer is faster at shut downs and startups and when i play games it dosnt freeze any more" ?

Now you say you have more problems. Make up your mind kid!

Reformatting means:
- emptying your drive of everything
- reinstalling windows
- reinstalling all drivers
- reinstalling all programs

If you've just paid to have it fixed and it's working Leave It Alone!

71394 2002-08-16 10:40:00 if you are planning to reformatt soon, now is a good time to poke around carefully and learn how your puter works. I say that because worst case scenario, and you'll have to reformat, which will happen soon any way. Before you do, move everything you want to keep out of the first partition.. And i mean everything, as when you format that first partition (the one your computer will see as "C:" drive) you will completely erease it ready for the new operating system.
I do this about once a year, i have 2 partitions, and can bring my windows 98se system back up running well with most of what i want running in about a day. most of the programmes i run are on CD, or waiting on the second partition or both. No offence here, but i only do this because the need, which stemmed from things getting just too screwwy meant i had to, and thus learnt how. I was VERY nervous about it first time, and got a friend with some experiance in to help me. If you dont know EXACTLY what you are doing, are dont have a helper to guide you first time my only advise is DONT DO IT!!!

71397 2002-08-17 00:38:00 teachme,
there is no need to tell you to uninstall anything, as you about to uninstall EVERYTHING, so that will be fine
back up everything that matters, then back up everything that matters.
And the most important advice ... Back up EVERYTHING that matters. I think you get my drift.

before you formatt, i also suggest you check a wee bit out about installing operating systems from scartch. It can and *should* be simple, but better to check it out know than later, when your machine is a dead lump of hollow steel waiting for the skills to be applied. read the book, make sure you understand what you are doing, and know what to expect. Then and only then should you consider reformatting.

71398 2002-08-17 01:30:00 OK Tim - listen very carefully.

FIrst follow Chris' advice on backing up. Once you reformat, nothing will be left on your disk. I mean NOTHING! So, anything you want to keep, backup to CD-R or somewhere else.

Secondly - while you still have a working PC, write down a list of all your hardware. That includes modem, cd-rom, cd-rw, network cards, graphix cards, and anything esle. Why? well, your current drivers won't work with windows 2000. You need to go online to all the manufacturers webpages and download the windows 2000 drivers for your hardware. It is no good if you reformat first - how can you download drivers if your modem doesn't go?

Once you have done that, save all the downloads to an external source. If you reformat, you will lose tham and you wil have wasted your time, so back them up.

You could also download all the Windows 2000 updates and do the same thing if you want, but that will take some time.

Now, you should have a few things before you start:

1. A Windows 2000 setup disc.
2. All of your original software discs. If you don't have the disc, then you won't be able to reinstall the program after you reformat. Rmember - EVERYTHING is gaone after a reformat.

3. You should have all your backed up data and drivers.
4. A list of all your hardware including manufacturers names and model numbers.
5. At least a whole day to do it - a weekend is better).
6. If possible another PC nearby to ask us for help if you need it.

Now you have everything you need, have a look on the net and read up on how to reformat. Print out any instrucytions you find. Look in more than one place to make sure the information you get is correct. Do the same for installing WIndows 2000. Now you have instructions on what to do, take a big breath and go for it.

Any questions??

71400 2002-08-17 01:46:00 i remember from previous posts that your machine has a HDD with 3(?) partitions
if you dont have a CD writer, put everything you want to keep in that big empty partion reserved for your sisters home work, AND where possible, on floppy disk. If you back up here, DO NOT ALTER the partition tables. Thats really playing with fire
if you do this be 100% sure that when you format you only format the first partition. Before i had a CD writer, i used a spare HD as my backup, and removed it from the machine. That might sound a little paranoid, but it is just too easy to format the wrong area, but if the stuff you want to keep isn't connected any more you will be safe.
