1286934 2012-07-08 06:05:00 I don't find Macbooks very nice to use, but every man & his dog seems to be buying one so it can't just be a fashion thing.

To all the Mac users here:
Why is OSX better suited to your needs than Windows 7?

1286935 2012-07-08 06:23:00 My current one has been maintenance free for 5 years now apart from a ram upgrade and a hard drive replacement. It's had numerous OS. Upgrades. The fact tht I don't have to manage it for the family makes it the choice for me, yes I have an AV running on it. The iLife software is something that has been, to put it apples way "magical". There maybe software on windows that is equal but none that comes with the OS and none that integrates to each other like iLife. plod (107)
1286936 2012-07-08 06:33:00 I find the UI better. Less crashes (from personal experience), faster boot times, better optimized system, Mac's as computers hold there value for resale better, I find the software to be cheaper and the OS, computers tend to last longer in terms of OS's and the build quality of apple computers is generally excellent. Also Pages is on Mac. iLife also wipes the floor with the windows equivalent e.g. movie maker and so on. icow (15313)
1286937 2012-07-08 06:39:00 I don't of course, however given the interoperability between the hugely popular iOS and a mAC flavoured PC,
it is hardly surprising that so many are being mesmerized by the new evil empire! :D

1286938 2012-07-08 06:50:00 I use a Mac to slowly drive myself insane :devil

But in all seriousness, my girlfriend has a MacBook and I don't see anything it does that Windows doesn't already do well...

1286939 2012-07-08 06:54:00 I got tired of having a gumboot holding the door ajar, so I got an Apple to solve the problem. I used to be annoyed if I stumbled over the gumboot, but kicking an Apple just feels so much better ;) R2x1 (4628)

You can look at it the other way. There isn't really anything that windows does over Mac's. The exception is obviously gaming. Neither is out right better, its all personal preference.

1286941 2012-07-08 07:01:00 I don't have a Mac myself but .. in photography maybe the OS itself is color managed (ie., ICC).
With my Win7, while desktop properties does have color management the color of the wallpaper and Internet Explorer just doesn't look the same as in a color managed software ie., Photoshop.

In some of the seminars I been to, photographers have used just the OS to view the slideshow.

1286942 2012-07-08 07:01:00 I don't have a Macbook but I have two PowerPC desktops that were given to me. One is an old 6100/66 and the other a G4 MDD.

To me they are useful for running Macintosh-only software, but that's about all I use them for.

1286943 2012-07-08 07:51:00 It is still a fashion statement, you must remember that the technically endowed among us all have reasonable reasons for choosing either or. Most people I know buy them for the following

> It looks nice
> It's "better" (than windows/other PC's)
> It doesn't get viruses
> They are superior for design, I am an artist.

Fair enough for the first one, it's a poor reason to base a sale on but aesthetically they are nicer, once you filter the tripe there are some very nice PC hardware designs around. UI wise it's a bit ho hum but I can see how OSX comes in there. One thing I find personally though is that although desktop junk is manageable and looks OK on the desktops, scale that to a laptop and ugh!! it becomes cluttered. WAB requires macbooks and they seem to become very grungy, all that white cabling goes black with use, not sure if that's because china is dirty though or if it's common. The aluminum also looks "dirty" after a lot of wear, that being said this is based on grotty spoilt students at an international school, not in general.

It's better is a great argument, what for? is a common question. Day to day tasks they are really the same. Some specialized stuff make's them better. User ignorance often makes the experiences more flowing on a mac though.

Virus free is picky one, viruses discovered for macs disprove this silly myth but the main threat these days is online threats. Regardless of OS security dumb users (which are often found aimlessly wandering around on mac's thinking they are safe) will be dumb. Windows/iOS/OSX/*nix/WP/Symbian are all targeted by web threats. Universal and easily implemented they are the weapon of choice these days. The thing is the "virus free" mentality has impacted deeply into mac users who often believe that they are 1000% impenetrable to ANY threat, Windows users tend to be a tad more clued up but not much more in the general users sense.

Superior for design/art is the biggest sh** since sliced bread. Photoshop is the main tool and available on both OS's. Performance is stable, smooth and impressive across the board but getting into the juicy high performance tasks is limited by apple's hardware. From there it's windows territory with cheaper high performance machines that whip the socks off an iPhone wielding designer in a jiffy. Video rendering and other intensive tasks are often cheaper on windows based but performance wise it's the same when OS's are compared.

Windows 8 is bringing some nice cards to the table as performance goes. Apple isn't really as high and mighty as the fan's laud, and windows isn't as cappy either. Really it's all personal preference but a lot of old myth and hype as well as buyer ignorance still drives the youth and uneducated adults to snap up iPhones and iMacs.
