1286670 2012-07-07 09:06:00 There is a monstrosity resembling a factory chimney erected in the 'Park & Ride' station, Albany. It is supposed to be a 'work of art', cost us over $119,000. We are told that money is short, our sewers are broken, our pavements are cracked, our roads are diabolical. Where do these people get off spending our money on very expensive rubbish. I wouldn't be surprised if the 'Artist' is related to a Councilor. mzee (3324)

The Council has approved the project but are not paying for it. Very wise of the Council.

Tauranga City Council has approved a site for the sculpture but no funding.

Creative Tauranga, which is leading the project, is now trying to raise the $800,000 required to complete the project.

No ratepayer money has been committed to this project.

 Don’t get sucked in by that. Translated that just means that on the books there will be a donation to “Creative Tauranga” who in turn will launder the funds for the project. ;)

But it’s not all bad news for the local Rate Payers because you guys are going to help out. :clap

From BOP Times 18/6/12:

The Government has given $150,000 towards the Hairy Maclary waterfront sculpture.
Tauranga MP Simon Bridges announced yesterday the Ministry of Economic Development Tourism Facilities Grant Programme was providing the money towards the installation of the bronze sculpture of Hairy Maclary and his friends.

Yep, effectively your Government is selling your Assets to help fund a statue of a Mutt.

I wonder if we all helped fund mzee's Albany Chimney too? :groan:

Dahhhh!

1286675 2012-07-07 22:14:00 Same problem here in Nelson, there is an arts trust that wants to put a $2.5 million sculpture on haulashore island. We the rate payers will be expected to pick up the tab for getting the site ready. Then to cap it all the arts centre in town wants the council to pay for its extension gary67 (56)
1286676 2012-07-07 23:33:00 Yes it’s amazing how these sods in Local Government and Central Government can preach about the need to tighten our belts and then endorse the waste $1m on a statue of a dog in our case. I suppose next thing he’ll require a $1m kennel! :waughh:

In the meantime we’ve Hospital waiting lists a mile long, including Cancer patients, who can’t get treatment because of a shortage of funds.

Fair go, the waste that can be traced back to Politicians, local and central, could easily justify the reintroduction of Public Floggings!

1286677 2012-07-07 23:37:00 They put up some dumb statues on Triangle road. Cost 10,000s dollars and they look ****. prefect (6291)
1286678 2012-07-08 03:12:00 Well, the Auckland public wanted to put up a statue of some K Rd vagrant who spent her drugged out years sitting there yelling abuse at passers by.

Seems the council is only following the example you set for them by wanting this #$%^!

If I had a choice I'd choose a statue of Hairy McClary over some boozed up nutcase any day.

1286679 2012-07-08 04:10:00 Ahhh yes, but I don’t think the memorial to a drug infested vagrant ever came to fruition did it?

Mind you, Auckland did relieve the Taxpayer of $2m for a Plastic Waka . Where is that now?

I guess it is off Pearl Harbour exercising with the Navy? :clap

Hmmmmm $2m for a Plastic Waka and $1m for a statue of a Mutt, difficult choice .

Unfortunately, we all have, or are going to, contribute to both whether we like it or not and there is damn all we can do about it . :angry
