I shot a vid of the fireworks going on around me tonight - this evening, really .

It's about 11:00 PM and you can still see that the sky is well lighted, but the displays went on anyway .

I can only say that these are all private, not municipal displays . Most cities can't afford to set up or fire off $20,000 in fireworks any more - so it's up to privateers to do it .

Now --- since I don't participate in holidays, I just decided to take avid or so of it anyway .

1286209 2012-07-05 07:49:00 We had a Fourth of July party in Wellington, in a hill suburb. (Roseneath) quite a few years ago. (1968?) The number of people that have to be advised that out of season fireworks are about to be let rip is astonishing. After the 8,720 letters of intent were sent off, correspondence averaging 73 letters per advisee was entered into. The post office decided to expand as a result of this surge in postal traffic and have never really recovered. A source of fireworks that were approaching their "Whoa! What's that seepy stuff" date were obtained at minimum prices and in rather large quantities. Every neighbour bar one was invited to the party, but he got to play a part anyway. After so much work getting the powers-that-be advised, it was decided that regular fireworks would be a bit average, so enhanced versions were devised. The first stage of the rockets comprised 7 rockets taped together, 3 in the second stage and one for the final stage. As the second stage lit up, it lit the fuse on a few strings of double happys to ensure that there were no big lumps of stage 1 falling on the unwary ( and 'cause it seemed pretty cool). Similar dismantling procedures aided by the odd sparkler satisfactorily dismantled Stage 2. Stage three had a couple of Catherine wheels to aid in sighting the beast, and a double happy or two to remove the stick shortly after the rocket flared.
When it came to the testing stage (all done on the night) it is pretty much a given that bigger is better, especially with MUCH bigger. Persons in the fall-out zone may not agree totally on that, but by the time we had run out of pyrotechnics they were probably all pretty weary down there anyway. The fusillade started around 6 pm, and fizzled out around 4 am. I expect that any subsequent years a similar event was planned, the vigilantes would have been scaling the ramparts before the first squib had got to full roar. Some of the bigger rockets fired late in the event weighed around a KG each rocket, 7 of those going off together was a memorable sort of a thing, estimates of altitudes achieved by those bigger ones were a bit suspect due to the fermented and spirituous beverages that went down as the fireworks went up.
All figures quoted are exact, except for the values which may be a bit rough. It took about ten of us around 6 hours to carry the explosives up the path, not assisted in the least by the 93 @#!~%@ steps up to the house. The house was 3 floors, each a ground floor to a varying degree. Ah, Wellington.

This activity finally quit about 1AM - and was 360º around me with very few lulls in the pyrotechnics .

It was rumored that there were some reports made of four sticks of dynamite taped together . I heard what I thought were a few mega-ton charges - perhaps these were they . I'll find out more at the barbershop today where I go to play some old time bluegrass music for a few hours .
