1286964 2012-07-08 10:31:00 What I am really interested in is why home users love Macs. I am convinced there is something tangible that makes the average user love their computer, but nobody I have asked can put their finger on exactly why they love their mac.

Businesses are going to be too heavily invested in one or the other to change, and I see now that amateur artists (photography, film, music) enjoy the simplicity of the software targeted specifically at them, but most home users are not invested in the Mac ecosystem and are not budding artists.

Tech assistance for my parents has dropped to almost zero apart from their first setup once I got them to switch, I offered to buy it off them if their didn't like it after 3 months. 90% of home users probably wouldn't need any other software then what comes with the mac. Got the new apple tv as well, great. Better then the nexusQ? And too my original post iLife, I have managed to get great value out of my macs by keeping them for a long time, but I would never suffer an underpowered machine so looking at anew one this year when the new iMacs are released

I'd say they don't love their PC at all, on any level, no matter which brand is on the case.

The vast majority of people view it much the same way others view a TV or an oven, If it does what they want then that's fine, if it doesn't then they hate it.

You do get a few fringe lunatics that believe they have attained some sort of status by owning an Apple.

1286967 2012-07-08 10:57:00 I also predict that in the future windows will be following more the way apple does things, then apple following how windows does things. plod (107)
1286968 2012-07-08 11:01:00 The only real reason imo people buy i-anything is that Apple have a brilliant marketing team.

I have been a PC all my life. In 2007 I got a Macbook, used it for 1 year and have like Mac more ever since. I don't even own a Mac anymore but when I get to use them I still prefer them to windows. It's not marketing. Its personal preference. Yes most people who know crap all about computers buy Mac's purely off marketing and brand image but there are a percentage of users who genuinely find the OS to be better.

I think it is just preference . I know a few IT people who most probably use PCs at work but have gotten at least a Mac and likes it .
These are the ones who work for Telecom or Alcatel . They don't play games, or install water cooling or overclock the CPU . They could have gotten another PC but just got a Mac . You could argue many average user get a PC . A lot of them don't just get a $699 special . With some business consultants, after they got their first Mac they said they liked the user friendliness . Maybe that is related to the OS and maybe installing peripherals is easier? I could ask around and get back to you . .

With my camera club, one of the recognised photographers uses a Asus laptop for his last presentation, recognised I mean that he's photographed the Queen and MPs . Some of the other photographers and club members ie . , normal Joe/Jane who pay their membership fee use Mac because the OS is colour profile aware . If you surf a webpage such as flickr . com the colors match, while on PC the color is a bit different even though you saved the image as sRGB . You can install color management plugins or edit various files with Firefox but it just means that if you want a quick preview of the image using Windows Explorer the colors are not that right .

The ones I spoke with, they are not into games, modding the computer, not even shareware . They don't get into trying all the diff software out . I don't think they get pure performance but for those who want a bit of it they just get a Macbook Pro or a Mac Pro .

1286970 2012-07-08 11:09:00 I could afford a PC that could do games on my budget. I couldn't afford a mac. I could afford a laptop that could be entertaining and play games moderately well on my budget. I couldn't afford a macbook, nor an imac, nor would I have bought one if I could have done. I would have saved the cash and spent it on a better PC and laptop.

Just like how I have a 100 dollar phone and 30 dollar or so DSE mp3 player. One makes calls and sends texts, the other plays music. As much as high res screens and apps and crap would be neat, I don't need that when I'm going home and to uni on the bus, and if I do, I'll have my laptop with me to do it far better than an ipod would do.

Could be applied to Android phones too right :D

1286973 2012-07-08 11:29:00 I don't have an android phone. I have a nokia. It takes 11 seconds of video or something. I'd get an android for the apps and mobility of it when I don't need a laptop, likely. But those occasions are so few and far between it just wouldn't be necessary. I mean hell, I specifically don't text back friends because it costs me 20 cents a text. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)
