1286066 2012-07-06 00:09:00 Race track. No where else to hold it in godzone. Hamptons is too small and too far away

Hampton Downs isn't that far from Puke... Not even 20 mins away from the Bombay Hills.
The real issue with Hampton Downs is that those morons built it next to a stinking **** hole. Do you wanna Enjoy a race or smell rubbish?

Haha i have never noticed the smell, but it sure looks like one. I heard v8 supercars are not interested unless there is 1 million people to support it. that rules every other city out
Hamptons would be great as it is so easy to get in and out, and they do have extension plans ready to lengthen the track but not sure when they will implement them

1286068 2012-07-06 02:35:00 At a cost to rate payers of 10.6 million? I thought businesses and business projects are to make money, not lose it. As much as I like car racing, if it cant make a profit, why do it? What a waste of money.

I see a Tui billboard in this...

Councils never get this sort of thing right . It WILL cost more than that.
Councils dont have a clue, & just seem to pull numbers out the air to try & justify things.
If it was only $10M over 5 years, dont you think Hamilton would still be wanting to run it??

Councils are not sporting promoters, so why do they need to stump up cash for this sort of thing.
If it was really so commercially viable, it wouldnt need $10M in funding

Remember the David Beckham fiasco that cost Ak ratepayers $$$$$ -- seems the Council has forgotten allready.

1286069 2012-07-06 04:11:00 I have no doubt it would bring a lot of flow-on money into the district but I have to agree, if it was such a winner, why did it cost Hamilton rate payers 40 million only to let it all go? The returns cant be all that good. Something doesnt quite stack up... Iantech (16386)

I dont know 1101, a street race is always substantially more cost wize than a circuit that is already there. Puke will need a lot of money thrown at it tho.
I thought the horse racing kicked them out from puke so they had no where to go and hamilton put their hand up years ago...
I would love to see a V8 supercar vs a supertourer race

EDIT: 1101 im not doubting you are right re the councils, right on the money actually

1286071 2012-07-06 05:33:00 street race....hmmn. I remember the s88t fight when they tied to bring the street race into
downtown Ak.
They would have wanted to close off some important streets, effectively shutting down MANY businesses
& closing off a important motorway onramp.
Thing is , there were all sorts of wild & wacky numbers just being plucked out of the air & put out as fact.
I remember one source saying the streets would be closed for a week, another saying the streets would be closed for a month....

Ive nothing against the V8 races though, & it is a drop in the bucket compared to what's been spent on Rugby, with monuments to the oval ball built at huge expense , only to become money sucking white elephants (eg Nth shore stadium) . Not to mention huge million dollar swimming pools being built when the beach is just 5 minutes away (in planning on the Nth Shore)

How about fixing our sewerage system 1st, so when dont have to pump it into the ocean when it rains.
Or real cycleways along those death trap roads. That would be better value for money & get more useage.

1286072 2012-07-06 08:53:00 Thats over 5 years. With such a large pop in that area that is only peanuts.
Mr Brown said the event would attract about 50,000 visitor nights and earn $7 million in economic benefits from an annual investment of $2.1 million. It would also bring significant investment into the Super City's southern Franklin ward.
Sounds pretty good to me.
:)

Typical the council basis this return on 130000 persons attending over the 3 days. Well that is as long as all of them come from outside Auckland - I would bet that 120000 are from Auckland and therefore no net gain to Auckland City, Fudging figures once again and the rate payers will pay. Glad I do not live up there.

It is all sorted; the "death trap roads" are solving the problem for us, admittedly rather slowly at the moment . I lost a bit more of my steadily diminishing tolerance for psychlists today while following one up a hill as he tacked enthusiastically from side to side to achieve a progress well under 5kmh up the hill . How helpful for us all that he was enjoying himself so much . He did manage to save a bit of time by ignoring the compulsory stop at the top of the hill . :angry

1286074 2012-07-06 11:33:00 He's Maori, so of course it counts. Now, if we had a council white advisor, it would be racism in the extreme.

Go away, clown

1286075 2012-07-06 11:45:00 Just an aside. Just been watching the F1 first pactice on Sky at Silverstone England. It is pouring down with rain and they have an estimated crowd of about 180,000 and the commentators were saying all the roads into Silverstone are chock a block with traffic. Over the 3 days of the meeting they are expecting over 300,000 people.
