1310444 2012-11-04 07:17:00 Hi
I'm trying to solve a problem with my nephews' computer. He's just installed Windows 8-64bit though all the new Adata DDR2 ram isnt being recognized.
It will find 2GB but the 2nd 2GB stick is either not recognized or the PC won't boot with it in. I understand both new sticks have been tried individually with success.

M2NPV-MX dual core
2 x A-Data 2GB DDR2 800 (6400) DIMM 3YR
Runs onboard graphics.
Runs the original PSU the PC came with maybe 6 years ago.
Bios version 1101 for Windows7 which is the newest non beta version. The betas don't appear to address memory issues in any case. Incidently, the Asus site doesn't have a Windows8 option for any download/s.
Asus website says:
2GB is the max per slot.
DDR2-800 is a compatible memory

Maximum memory isn't constrained in advaced boot options.

Comments invited.
Thanks.

1310445 2012-11-04 07:37:00 could be the slot itself. try using 1 stick but in different slots. Slankydudl (16687)
1310446 2012-11-04 07:52:00 if it's running onboard graphics it could quite happily be reserved by the system, if it's simply windows not seeing it. If it's not booting at all, will other operating systems work, like live linux distros and such? 8ftmetalhaed (14526)
1310447 2012-11-04 09:32:00 Looking at that board, it has 4 slots, do you have the memory in both yellow slots or one in yellow other in Black ? wainuitech (129)
1310448 2012-11-04 10:09:00 Thanks for the responses.

To elaborate further, the PC in question is in Christchurch and I'm in Hamilton. Info may take a little time to shuttle back and forth.
I'm going to get a better idea of what slots/memory configurations have been tried. Will be asking this question and reporting back asap.
I should also note that it's known that one slot has physical damage however that particular slot was never used. The PC has spent all its' life so far with a single stick of memory.
First it was 1G, then 2G. Till this week it was 32bitXP.

I haven't asked about other OS booting. He'd be quite capable of burning a CD and running another system so maybe it would be good to know and would help narrow down the possibilities.

We've been talking about the dual channel capabilities and he has read the online manual. I'm guessing that he would have tried one yellow/one black. I'll be confirming this shortly.
Thanks.

PS. This thread (social.technet.microsoft.com) looks interesting. The point about the DRAM mapping may warrant further investigation.

1310449 2012-11-04 11:22:00 First step is making sure you can see the 4gb in the BIOS. If not, refer WT's post, the RAM should either be in the black OR the yellow slots - not one in each. Or in your case, the pair that one isnt damaged. Curious to know how one received some damage and what damage that is as it may also be a factor. Iantech (16386)
1310450 2012-11-04 18:35:00 See if there's a memory remap feature option in the BIOS. If there is, change it to enabled Speedy Gonzales (78)
1310451 2012-11-04 22:25:00 Adata is unreliable RAM. Try another Brand, eg Kingston.

We used to sell ADATA RAM, had far too many issues ,
even had warranty replacement RAM DOA (more than once), that was the last straw.

I have had very few ADATA failures, no worse than any other anyway. You're always going to get them in a mass-produced world.

From the OPs posts, nothing indicates faulty RAM at this stage in my opinion.

1310453 2012-11-05 04:55:00 Info came today:
Bios recognizes only 2GB.
Have tried turning off ram remapping... doesn't work either the computer boots but only regonizes 2gb of ram.

From memory, the slot had damaged contacts so the plastic was clearly marked to avoid accidently using it.

In a review of the manual I note there could easily be scope for confusion, I'm instructing to be sure the same colour slots are used. I've sent the email just now, so we'll see.
thanks
