1310224 2012-11-03 02:57:00 Is it true that SSD doesn't require defragmentation? I heard that defragmentation will be disabled by Windows automatically, true?

I got my SSD and installed Win8 a couple of days ago, checked and found that Defragmentation and Optimisation function is still there. Do I need to disable it manually, and how?

1310225 2012-11-03 03:27:00 SSD's don't require defragging, in fact doing so will shorten their lifespan considerably. Windows 7 does auto disable it, don't know how it works in win8 though. I'd guess it would only defrag your HDD and skip your SSD. Nick G (16709)
1310226 2012-11-03 03:58:00 Just checked that Win8 turns ON defgrag (optimise) my SSD by default. Have turned it OFF manually. bk T (215)
1310227 2012-11-03 04:05:00 If you think about it on a spinning disk a fragmented file is scattered around the place and the head has to manually move to each fragment to load the file. SSD's have no moving parts and access time for any piece of a file is pretty much the same wherever it happens to be. What brand SSD ? both my samsung and intel drives have a utility available that checks for you wether windows is configured correctly for an SSD. dugimodo (138)
1310228 2012-11-03 04:33:00 It's OCZ Vertex4 128GB. Doesn't come with any utility disc. bk T (215)
1310229 2012-11-03 07:27:00 SSD needs to configure?

Could current SSD users please advise me, how and what shall I do with my new (first time user) SSD.

Thanks

1310230 2012-11-03 09:44:00 No, you don't configure anything (In both Windows or Linux), nor do you defrag it, ever.

In Windows 7 and Windows 8, it's clever enough to know not to run it.

This is my Win8, default settings:
44494450

It knows not to defrag it. I've been running it for a week now.

1310231 2012-11-03 10:44:00 Chilling_Sillence, isn't 'Optimise' same as defrag?

how do get access to the defrag in Win8?
