1286648 2012-07-07 08:47:00 So- a kid has to be 18 years of age before being allowed to buy a 'Scratchy' ticket! But the same kid is deemed to be intelligent and mature enough to get married and raise a child at 16! They can also drive. But God forbid they buy a ticket! mzee (3324)
1286649 2012-07-07 08:58:00 Wrong. Parental consent is required to marry if you are under 18.

The issue is, if you can buy a gambling ticket, why can't 18 year olds go to casinos, too?

You can marry at 16 if you do not live with your parents, and are not supported by them, or have no parents or Guardians.
I see no reason for admitting a 16 year old to a Casino just because he can buy a lottery ticket. The Casino would be treated the same as a Bar.

1286651 2012-07-07 09:48:00 I have never been into a Casino and I seldom gamble. Do they serve alcohol in a Casino? Alcohol and gambling not a good combination for an under 18 year old. Bobh (5192)
1286652 2012-07-07 09:48:00 They should just make everything legal at age 20 and be done with it. Would save a lot of confusion, let's face it, who really is responsible at 16 for any of those thing just mentioned?

1286653 2012-07-07 09:59:00 We used to celebrate the coming of age when we reached twenty one. Now days there is confusion about the coming of age whether it is eighteen or twenty.

Read here (www.makenewzealandhome.com) for legal ages in New Zealand.

1286654 2012-07-07 10:35:00 I think driving is ok at 16, it's needed for a lot of travel and jobs etc. You need to be 17 now for a restricted or is it 17.5? Drinking will always be debated, it's a maturity thing. Some people never grow up. When younger most kids are stupid with money, gambling is a problem now, would be worse with younger ones.

at 16, sure it's possible to get married but unless you are real stupid or really in love (or forced) I doubt any 16 year old kid is looking to get stuck with a bloke/shelia for the rest of their lives!

20 for marriage
18 for gambling
14 for gun licence

1286656 2012-07-07 11:10:00 Did you know :

You can learn to fly at any age?

But you can't fly solo until you're 16 (i.e. you're in the airplane for the very first time by yourself. Your instructor has done a runner with the instructions "bring it back in one piece", or "don't bend it" or words to that effect).

At 16 you can earn a Private Pilots Licence (i.e. take mum and dad, GF BF etc for joy rides).

At 17 you can earn a commercial pilots licence (i.e. get paid to fly).

I don't think age is the criterion here. What is important for flying is, a strictly supervised training course with professionally trained and qualified instructors. Driving a car ideally should be the same, but in most cases is left to family or friends to act as instructors. The point of this is, with supervised and qualified training, anything is achievable.

Given enough time and training, you could teach a chimp to fly a 747 or a car. These are mechanical skills.

But at 16, one does not have the life skills to cope with the fickle demands of emotions. Be those emotions in coping with the enticing promises of a quick buck at the Casino, or the judgement to make a sound or mature selection of a life partner. (I married for the first time at 23, and I didn't have that maturity).

1286657 2012-07-07 12:35:00 I left school at 15, always carried weapons, went in to Bars, completely independent. I didn't get married until I was 30 when we were drunk, long story. Had to leave her behind when I was deported for political reasons. mzee (3324)
