2002-08-18 07:28:00 | It is impossible to future-proof with a computer purchase. There is always something that will be released that won't run on your computer with all the extras turned on. Personally, the best wa\y is to build yourself or get someone you know to build it for you. Else a local friendly computer shop with a GOOD reputation.

2002-08-18 07:54:00 | excuse me Greg and -=JM=-, look at what unity is doing with 'puter (s)he is not a gamer, and the most demanding thing being done is the graphics work for web page quality graphics I can do far more than that on my 4(?) year old windows box, so whats the point of advising all the bells and whistles for someone who will barely idle the machine??? We really need to hear fom unity at this point and see just what unity defines as an "old machine", and what sort of problems are happening.. Maybe i've been poor too much of my life, but i am very cautious about advising that people spend $$ till i found out exactly what the problem is, and what the needs are. This applies particually when people say the dont have the cold hard folding stuff, and will have to resort to finance to pay for the new machine!

2002-08-18 08:24:00 | I agree with Chris...... Unity should look out a good computer shop in his/her area who will be more than happy to sit down over a coffee and find out what is required. I would suggest either reconditioning Unities present computer, or even trading in the box on a newbie - thus retaining monitor/keyboard etc. That way, its gonna cost less than a grand, and will provide satisfaction for a few years to come. Thats my opinion anyway - DC

2002-08-18 08:41:00 | and of course the answer might be something like replace the 32meg ram chip with a 256 chip total cost: $130 then assuming there is resonable processer speed etc the machine will love photoshop, or whatever graphics/layout programs are in use. remember that unity is working with smaller images at web quality (72 DPI), not full A3 glossy magazines at 300+dpi with a deadline. If the later was the case, i would advise budget 2 grand i've checked her webpage, theres nothing on it that would be demanding on a older machine to create

2002-08-18 10:06:00 | ok heres the specs as far as i know......and remember i am a noivice at this........I just want something that works !!!!! wont %$%# up oh and by the way the latest was i couldn't get into anything that needed applets, and java so i had to go down load some java thing .... i have a free site on yahoo and couldn't even get into it ...or my fav chat room !! but have fixed that it remains to be seen however if it still works tomorrow when i turn it on.........yes i agree i hate the idea of buying new and getting my self into debt but heres the story......i had a comp that was gifted to me built in 95 it went in every resepect but it keept crashing it was gifted to me because i was doing a alternative magazine .......eventaullay so a so called friend who owned lots of comps an email store offered to 'fix' it or replace it with a better one......so he replaced it with one that gave me electric shocks...!!!! then the software crapped out.......then he replaced it with another but i couldn't use the word package which is essential for a writer.....cos it had messages of runing out of memory when i just put a dot on the page.......so that went back to be fixed then finally he admitted he had 'lost' my orginial comp and gave me another ......what he gave me was a 34mb -1g to replace my orginal 64mb 2gbs !!! it froze up on me the first time i turned it on didin't have a printer card nor a sound card......the only thing i could do was internet untill it kept freezing up......after my experience with this guy i thought the best thing i could do was smash it up into tiney pieces and post it back in an envelop....talk about being ripped off....so i went and bought this piece of **** for $400 it is 64mb ram good sound 24xcdrom and normal floppy i don't know where to look for the specs.... i have lots of posts of late detailing all my problems ......the hh error didn't get fixed although i now can get help search !! but not the index !!! its alread crashed dead x3 today plus all the bsod and error messgaes i can't afford to get a tech to fix it and how do i trust that they have cos i had a tech friend look at it to swap the parts and even he can't find why it crashes or why when it does it reverts to all its old %^%$ settings ! soooooooooo i thought why not just go new with a warantey and be dammed.....at least i will have a good machine......one hopes and even if i didn't then at least i have comeback i no longer trust anything....but i live in hope being the eternal optimist that i am.....i've lost the chance of doing a couple of income earning things by not have a stable machine I reckon i deserve a new computer to be gifted to me for sheer enduarnce the whole community thinks i do but unfortanutely they are broke to.... again i beleive you don't need all the **** thats coming out today i agree this machine can do the same thing......but i believe also that people delet their stuff before they sell and they delete prog info as well......i am even thinking of doing a course at poly here just to become a techie..... but then i'd be up for ummmmmm 24,000 loan instead of 2,300 | unity (212) | |
2002-08-18 10:16:00 | oh thanks for that suggestion i had never thought of that my screen and key board and mouse are newish anyway......do they do hp for the cpu unit only ???? oh i could just add a printer and it would be much cheaper... thats if they do it.that way ? | unity (212) | |
2002-08-18 10:33:00 | 64 meg of ram, will cope, but thats about it. i ran 64 untill the beginning of last year and doing graphics work was painful. I'm currently running 128. Thats fine with everything i want to do at the moment. for RAM prices look HERE (https://www.computerfuture.co.nz/) look under memory i realise you are in nelson not chch, but these prices will give a guide. Updating ram is as easy as taking the old chip out, and putting in a new one. what is the processer speed? this should flash past in the blink of an eye as you reboot it will say something like AMD 450 or from what you say an the age of the machine i suspect it wont be much higher than that. In essence i suspect your problems are not that the comp itself is a peice of proverbial, but that the software installed on in is pretty stuffed up... i'm sure it is of no surprise to hear that that is not that uncommon, and that many of us here format, and reinstall everything from time to time just to keep things tidy. This is probably what you need to do. while you are there you might want to consider a new bigger HD, less than $200 for 20 gig, your machine will probably only take 30 tops. Printers are disposable, if you use them alot you'll get about a year out of it before it starts grinding itself to death, you should be able to purchase one for less than the price of the deposit on a new system. there's food for thought, feel free to ask anything as we are but here to help!

2002-08-18 10:37:00 | i might do another mag if i had a decent comp to do it on...or i might start nelson FREE press a to get info out the the nelson coprate owned media won't......i missed out on doing the nelson live the night gig guide cos i havn't a stable machine.....and i stopped doing the alternative mag cos of not having a stable machine.....i agree i have to say that this old thing can do just about everything one of them high priced newbies can but i just don't have the $$$$$ anymore to upgrade parts i don't even think it is the hardware but the ops is going loopy so maybe i need to learn how to reformatt.....or even know a bit more about it....like if i reformat does that clean everything and i reinstall win98 then everything will be ok ?so maybe some reformating advice is needed......i have to tell you that this has been a challenge and is A CHALLENGE....the problems that i have had and i don't even do anything........if i did have a newie i would consider doing much more but more graphic stuff rather than music and by the way I am a she :) | unity (212) | |
